Derbyshire Warning

B

Beanie

Just got this through in my mag meeting minutes, and thought i better share it, scares the **** out of me, if this is the future, i don't want to be in the uk anymore.

"Surveillance System: The Dft have announced up to £200,000 funding for Derbyshire County Council to create ‘an innovative data system to analyse patterns of motorcycling and to target social marketing towards motorcyclists’. In other words, to create a new surveillance system designed to track movements of motorcyclists on the roads. The system will be operational by Easter on various roads in Derbyshire (full list at the very bottom of the minutes) The project is said to involve DCC working closely with the motorcycling community in Derbyshire, with education, training, publicity and targeted enforcement activities. MAG has already made contact with the project officer and is arranging an urgent meeting to understand what DCC intend and how this development could affect riders elsewhere. The system appears to be an amalgamation of existing technology, such as sensors in the road that can tell motorcycles apart from other vehicles, measure their speeds and read their number plates. The worrying development is that data such as the routes taken by individual motorcyclists along with time and date will be collected and kept even if they have committed no offence (this is bad. Please tell us, someone, is this legal? Sounds like discrimination to us.) The civil rights groups have expressed grave concern about the potential for invasion of privacy. In the same announcement, up to £597,000 has been allocated to reduce the disproportionately high numbers of motorcycle casualties on the A537 ‘Cat & Fiddle’ which borders Derbyshire. The money will be given to Cheshire East Council (one of the new unitary authorities).
