Hi all,
My Mille came with a titanium Aprilia racing can and the original boat anchor. Whilst I like the noise of the race can, I think it is probably a bit much for my neighbours to put up with and I don't fancy walking the bike round the corner before starting it every time. I plan to try an put some Acoustafil packing in the race can, which I have used to very good effect with my Triumph race can on my Daytona.
Anyway, I got stuck into sorting out the MIlle yesterday and found that the airbox restrictor had been removed and the blue/green wire had been cut, so I decided to de-restrict the original can to suit and make it a bit fruitier and use it until I can tame the race can a bit.
I'd read that you need to grind away the spot welds and then use brute force to remove the restrictor. I could only see one spot weld which I had a good go at with several dremel attachments. However, in the end I relied more on brute force, which proved to be very effective! The body of the can is built like the QE2, so will stand up to some force being used on the inside without distorting.
I started with a flat screw driver and prised the steel mesh away from the body of the can a bit and towards the centre. then I used a cold chisel and big rubber hammer to get the chisel between the mesh cylinder and the body of the can so I could bend the mesh away from the body all round, including breaking the welds. Once I had done this, I used my slide hammer with the attachment the replaces the knurled screw in a pair of Mole grips. With the Molies gripped on tight to the mesh, a single stroke of the slide hammer brought the whole thing out. Unfortunately, I didn't take pics at every stage, but here's a couple of the of slide hammer set up and the result: :doug
I will post a video of the sound of the re-restricted original can - it actually sounds quite meaty when you give it a blip!:devious
