Dash glass

Howdy all,

I have a quick question regarding an 04 RSV1000R (newer shape), if you don't mind me dropping in out of the blue to pick brains. Having got the bike out of the shed for the first time in a while, the dashboard glass (well, plastic) had a crack. Only a little one at the bottom, god knows how it got there, but such is life. Anyhow, didn't anticipate it being a problem other than being a tad ugly, but after a couple of days use I came back to it today to find an array of cracks spreading upward from the original one. I guess change in temperatures coupled with vibration of use and weakened fascia from the original crack did for it. But now it definitely needs replacing.

Having checked the partsfiche, the glass isn't available separately (the clocks only come complete), and there's nothing in the workshop manual about splitting them. I'm hoping that rather than splash out upwards of £150 for a second hand dash and the inherent inaccurate odo, I can get into them and get a new bit of perspex cut to fit. Before I rip them off and go at them with a screwdriver, has anyone had this dash unit apart? Is it simple/possible? Is the seal separate to the actual glass or is it moulded to it? Any issues with disconnecting and reconnecting the clocks (eg. anything I need to do to get the ECU to recognise them afterwards)? Or any other comments?

Many thanks in advance for any pointers...

the dash swap is a straight change. that is no problem. the glass could be replacable if you are skillful enough and you get some replacement glass but i am affradi you can do more damage than repair if it is all glued or sealed. just give it a try if you cant live with current glass anymore. either you manage to do it or you buy second hand dash board. nothing to lose

so that makes it clear. you wont replace the dash glass with anything else as its shape is quite complex. maybe if you could find a dash that is damaged electrically and not working while having the glass perfect.

Buggar. Many thanks for the link, saved me ripping it to pieces only to find it's not doable! Expected it to be a flat sheet sealed in from looking at the outside, evidently not! Will have to phone round dealers and see if anyone happens to have an old set of clocks from a warranty replacement, I can't see breakers wanting to split them and no-one advertises knackered ones!

Anyone got a **** set of clocks they want to flog me for cheap?! :exclamation
