I just recently bought a 2007 RSV1000R Mille with 5000 miles that is bone stock from a reputable dealer. The bike has been kept up with on all of its maintenance, but the thing that has me concerned is the valve ticking. I've never owned a big twin before. I generally have just owned and raced inline 4 race bikes (mostly GSXR's). I know that a little bit of engine noise is common on big twins, but since this is my first one, I'm not sure what is normal.
I fire the bike up and it runs fine, but the ticking of the valves is relatively pronounced, but not too excessive. If I were to hear this much ticking on my old inline's, I would go get the valves adjusted the next day. Since I picked this bike up with 5,000 miles, I'm not 100% sure if it has had it's 5000 mile maintenance (I think you're supposed to have it checked up at 5000 miles; correct me if I'm wrong).

That's my main concern, but other than that I just have some general questions (call me a newb, but I've used the search button at the top and came up empty).
1.) How often should the oil be changed? I have the owners manual, but it doesn't state it very clearly on how often. I'm a bit anal about having fresh oil in my bikes, so I changed it every 2,000 miles on my old inlines. I've heard that's a bit excessive for the Aprilia's (again, correct me if I'm wrong)
2.) This is more of just a reaffirming question, but I've heard from one of my good friends who owns a '01 Mille that i should have regular service done on it every 12,000 miles. Any thoughts?

This is my first time posting on this forum, though I've been registered for a while now. So far I've just been using it for the search button and finding out information that way.

Feel free to call me a newbie/squid/whatever you like because I'm sure you guys have all heard these questions a thousand times before. Maybe you will be able to point me in the right direction with out too much flaming :nana

So far I have 1000 miles under my belt (in the 9 days that I've had the bike) and couldn't enjoy it more. Here's to a happy new Aprilia owner :doug

hallo ,welcome ...mate give griff a shout [fusebox] he is the servicing guru on here amongst other thangs ...depends on where you are bud he is in middle earth [ tamworth] but i speak for all on here he's ya geeza

The ticking noises are nothing to worry about unless it really is a pronounced tick tick tick etc...Service intervals are every 6000 miles on your model, alternating between minor and major service with valve clearance check.

do a search on checking oil level as it's not the same as a jap inline 4.

read up all you can to get the best out of these amazing bikes

Welcome m8,
I don't know much and can't really answer any of your questions but 2000 mile oil change sounds good to me and I service my bike every 5-6000 miles,I think 6000 for a service is what's recommended.
Anyway there are a lot of people on here that appear quite clued up but as Butch says Griff (Fusebox) is the one I'd ask.
Happy riding................................

i'm also a fairly new owner to the twins and like you and a lot of us have previously ridden in line fours, when i bought mine , i thought the same, a bit too rattly, after a couple of reassuring comments of local millie owners , i felt more content until it got the better of me and had the clearances checked, they were fine, some exesssive ticking i have been told can sometimes be the hydrolic tensioner :)dunno) , ideal if you can listen to someone elses for comparison, , you can hear everything on the mille mind you and im sure your worying over nothing expecially on the low miles you have :thumbup

Dude Grady is in TEXAS ,,,:devious

the Rotax lumps are noisy but very very reliable.

Do a search though on sprag and starting procedures.

Enjoy the character of the APE

I appreciate all of the input, guys.

I guess my "search button" abilities are a bit sub-par at the moment :down

There's a Aprilia shop here in Texas that has an excellent reputation. I will plan on taking it down there in the next couple of weekends for a full run over.

As for now, I'll try to keep the squid postings to a minimum :nana

Welcome squidy ... :nana. Don't worry about looking daft here mate, if you've got a question ask away.
If you're using it on track (judging by your avatar looks like you might be), then 2000 mile oil changes are not excessive. They're noisy old lumps compared to IL4s so don't worry.
Have fun:thumbup

This bike is my daily driver, and currently my only mode of transportation (how's that for an enthusiast? :inlove), so no track time for the Riller :rant.

I don't think I'm entirely ready to convert to a twin track bike. I used to race 2-stroke dirtbikes as a kid, and then started on inline 4 race bikes when I was 14 years of age. I'm not entirely used to the fact that I have low end torque now :doug.

Plus, it'd be a shame for me to go down on such a beautiful bike, especially since it's my only whip for the time being (I'm a broke college student). I sold my car, my '06 GSXR 750 street bike, and my '97 GSXR 750 race bike for this thing

Hi Grady,
I've yet to see anybody flamed for asking questions here.

The neat thing about this group is, while there may be differences of opinion, we are all passionate about our bikes & more than happy to help others. These Brits seem to know a thing or two about RSVs, which is good because there are relatively few over on this side of the pond.

I'd change the oil now so you know what you've got. While the top end is a little noisy anyway, yours could also have a lighter viscosity oil than Aprilia reccomends. My preference is for Motul semi-synthetic 15-50 (but that is a whole other discussion) & will change it at 2500 km intervals. Make sure you find the thread on how to accurately check the level in a dry sump motor.

Glad to hear you are putting on the miles - I've had to park mine for the winter.

Best thing for you is to get to AF1 Racing if you can, they seem to be THE people in the USA for Aprilia. I appreciate Texas is a big place and you may still be a great distance from them but at least they could put your mind at rest, and advise service intervals, best oil for the local conditions etc.

As others have said, compared with a Honda for example it's a noisy old beast, but you grow to love it.

Welcome to the forum mate. :thumbup

Given your climate (Texas) would your service intervals not be shorter due to the environmental differences to that in Europe? (Filter cleaning/changes etc... not oil changes)

I change my engine oil + filter every 12 months or 3500 miles, whichever comes first. (Usually the mileage) The air filter gets cleaned and re-oiled every 12 months and the brake and clutch fluid renewed at this time too. The coolant gets dumped every 24 months but this all depends on what coolant you use in the system.

Due to the lovely weather here in Blighty I go round all my electrical connectors once a year and clean them off with electrical cleaner and pack them with Dow Cornings electrical grease.

Lastly the brake callipers get removed and the pads are removed and inspected every 12 months, they are then thoroughly cleaned up and then refitted.

I use veg oil and service it everytime i eat chips . Lovely :eatcorn

Is that a flying unicorn playing a banjo, by jove it is splendid :dowhat
