Co2 settings

This is waht I run. 00 Mille with open air box and race can.

Question

TPS set correctly
TBs balanced at 23 cmHg
Co2 set at 1.00 front and rear.

At low speed the engine is "hunting or surging" as if its running too lean.

Its also backfiring on the over run

Any ideas?

Did some research on this since i spoke to you.

essentially your bike is correct as per Aprilia's latest guildines.
The problem is it seems there is a feeling that Aprilia's co setting has more to do with meeting emissions rules than the optimal setting.

I have found numerous people with similar issues, some saying to load the front cylinder etc etc whereas Aprilia want you to have co and Vac balanced front and rear.

The best compromise i can find is to either run the front vac at +50 mba or run the co higher than the aprilia spec of .88 -1.3 %.
I am seeing between 2 and 4 % mentioned as a good setting but basically as rich as poss without the idle speed reducing is put forward as a guide. I will still look for more info.

In general it's all very confusing with even Aprilia at odds at times.
The post 04 bikes run rear map bias on map 1 and front map bias on map 2 :dunno
what's that all about then, has to be emissions.

The crux is if you set it via the latest Aprilia specs you get very good emissions / mpg but the bike runs quite lean and prone to surging. A problem mine has produced set by the book.

watch this space.

should also mention the settings aprilia state are based on their own chip so not sure if Gabro does any cylinder loading in the map of his chip. Could be he has altered it and adjusting the co to Aprilia specs is undoing something he built into the map. Worth seeing what he says.

Cheers Colin

Ive left a message for Gabro on AF1. Ill see what he has to say. But he probably wont be sober until Tuesday following Rossi's win. In the meantime I have richened the front up my a 1/4 turn and it has made a small improvement over yesterday, but not much.

Griff has said he uses 3.5 % which ties in with Ken Zeller from Evo.

That is looking a fav value to try.

Got this message from Ed at AF1 so it's looking confirmed.

shoot for 3% idle CO%

the 1% is for tree huggers and governments....almost all engines really dont like 1% CO at idle....all engines I've messed with purr at 3-3.5% CO.

Hi guys,

What tools are you using to take your CO and vacuum measurements?

Would love to check mine out as it cuts out now and again when approaching junctions etc.... can't afford to stick it in to a dealer as funds are pretty tight at the moment.

When i took my 03 in after fitting a new can, the front cylinder was 4.0 and the rear cylinder 1.5,they are now both on 3.0 and it runs fine and uses less juice.

i have an Aprilia header take off kit which has a switchover box to go between cylinders.

And a Gas analyser for the Co duties.

A Vac gauge will set the Tb's up pretty well but Aprilia always say Co should take president over Vac.
That would seem to be confirmed by Sabre's experience where he had set the vac with a gauge but his front Co was up over 10%. Having set the Co he rechecked the vac and it's near enough spot on.

His bike just needs to be tweaked to be a bit more rich now.

Ozz we are coming to the same conclusions.

The Aprilia manual spec sets it too lean more for emissions than our riding experience.

Thanks to a revisit to the workshop at chez spoon the Co2 now stands at 3.5 and the bike runs fine, might fine. Thanks to all who contributed.:pirate:eatcorn

Exclnt & interesting thread..glad you got it all sorted now Sabre :thumbup
