Clutch Slipping

Fitted new Rene airbox and sounds amazing, is so loud:thumbup
But when testing.......:confused
Clutch was slipping under load in 6th and then again in 4th, has had a new slave 12-18 months ago and only covered about 2000 miles since then and is losing no fluid out of reservoir, any ideas?

May still have a early presure plate fitted that were known to not be machined properly.
Get hold of a pressure plate from an 01 onwards bike and that should stop the problem.

Cheers, any suggestions as to where to get one from. Have read the threads on prilia yorkshire so not there!

Speak to ANdy at Southern Cross, they often have low-mileage used ones in the workshop from where they have fitted full slipper clutches to race bikes.

They did one on my old Mille and charged me 20 quid.

matey, i changed to a STM slipper clutch so I have the oe clutch gubbins in a box here at work,
PM me bud

what did you do with the crankcase vent when you added the renegade kit ?
If you routed it to a sealed catch can then the engine will not vent and the pressure build up will operate the slipper mechanism and cause slip.

a catch can is fine but it needs to vent to atmosphere as well as catching excess oil etc.

So do u need to put a filter on the end of this vent pipe !?

No you can use a catch can but it must have a vent hole otherwise you pressurise the crankcase.

it's crankcase pressure that blows the oil out of the breather so if you seal that pipe to a closed catch can the pressure looks for another route out which is often via the clutch diaphram, hence you get slip as it expands.

Crankcase vent? Fitted the kit, pipe to small itg filter connected to lh side of bike, is the crankcase vent on lh side or rh side of bike? Did take a small bore pipe off rh side of airbox but it was blocked anyway so decided it was no use.

Runs from left of rear cylinder. Filter method should be fine as long as it's not restricting the crankcase ventialltion. If your in doubt remove the filter and try it again and see if it still slips. Make sure the pipe has no blockages.

If you have a general clutch slip issue it will normally be when torque through the plates is high. If it's a crank pressure issue it will be at higher engine speeds when crankcase pressure is high.

The fact you are getting slipping in 5th and 6th would normally mean it's not a torque related issue as the bike would have plenty of momentum. wheras coming out of a corner say in 2nd or 3rd would mean your accelerating a relativally slow lump of weight and demanding a high clutch load.

I was at about 8-9000 revs when it started to slip both times, I tightened the connector for the breather right up so will slacken off when get home. defo not blocked as bore is huge and pipe is clear. I have marked on the pic in white where my small itg filter goes (except its the other side, only pic i could find) and attached the pipe to the pipe on the lhs, is this the breather?. Thanks for your help.

If you have discounted the points that Spoonz's had made, whip the clutch pressure plate off and have a look at the contact surface, only takes 10 mins to do....
If the wear pattern is not even across the whole contact surface, I would wager a fair few quid on it being your issue. I speak from experience on this one......

looks about right. I will replace the whole hose tonight as i joined mine onto the existing. Thanks Spoonz hope this cures it.

Will do that aswell, early finish tomorrow so will look then
thanks lads

Cool pictures !! Now i know what to do !!!
Were do i get 1 of those little filters ?

Ok, checked pipe and its all clear, do i need to drain oil to look at the clutch? because when i looked at the casing its got a seal on it so checked in haynes (i hate that book) and it says you have to drain oil, (needs an oil change but didnt want to do it this weekend). Took pictures and checked filter last night, will take out for a spin tonight and upload pictures if there is still a fault.

Get a filter, they sound the dogs

No need to drain the oil, just put the bike on the sidestand.

Remove side cover, wind out pressure plate bolts and the clutch will come to bits. Try to keep the plates in order if you can.

Check the pressure plate for an uneven wear pattern across the contact surface, thats where I would guess the problem lies.
Also check the friction material left on the fibre discs and the steels for blueing.

Took bike out sat night and all was well, took it out again monday and started slipping but only a little. Seemed to do it around 5-6000 rev, next step is to take clutch cover off and have a look.
