Hi,

Just getting used to the mille, just need some advice, it's almost impossible to engage neutral with the engine on, also find the bike jumping out of gear under heavy acceleration particuarly 4-5-6th gears, only had the bike a week just wanted to see what your thoughts are before I drop it back at the dealers, seems to be quite a bit of play in the clutch, reading the service book it indicates that the clucth may need bleeding, the bikes only done 3000 miles, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Paul

Hello,
I just got my Mille on Friday. I also can not seem to find neutral. Had a Benelli before and that had just not got a neutral with the engine running so quite used to the problem but was looking forward to having one. Never heard anyone mention this problem before?

thanks mate, its going in the garage tomorrow, am hoping it just needs bleedin, as concerning is it jumping out of gear at high revs then deciding to clunk back into gear, I'll let you know what the garage say.

Try bleeding the clutch first, there's a "how to" section with a write up on it there :thumbup

Hi mate, had the same problem myself. When gunning it and particularly bad engaging and jumping out from 5th to 6th. Couple of lads on here suggested the chain might be loose. It was and I adjusted it but it's still happening, although not as often. Rather disconcerting isn't it, esp at over a ton!! Made me slow down a bit as it feels like it will throw me off. If the clutch bleed works can you let me know. Cheers

will do mate, checked my chain tension and its fine, very disconcerting I was pulling about 140 when it jumped out of gear then snapped back into gear, yep I thought it was gonna throw me off, I'll c what they say when they've had a look at it, it's enough getting used to the v-twin coming from an inline 4 without having any mechanical grief, love the bike and the grunt but need the confidence that its not gonna jump out of gear and I'd like to be able to stick it in neutral with the engine on.

Cheers bud. Have a look at this thread I put on last week. One thing I started doing was as soon as it disengaged or failed to engage at all was pull the clutch in a slow down and then upshift. 140 must have been a bit scary when it happened! Puts you off 'going for it' doesn't it.

yep, certainly put me off lol just booked a trackday at anglesey for may and want it right for that.

Picked the bike up from the dealer on Thursday, they bled the clutch and replaced the fluid with new fluid, happyto report it's now sweet as a nut on gearchanges and will now engage neutral, just gonna have to keep an eye on it knowing now that it may need regular bleeding.

My bike used to jump out of gear between 5th and 6th. I then changed my pegs to Gillies so i could relocate the rear brake master cylinder, so i could have a brake that worked, and since then not a single missed gear in 2k miles. It is a much more positive gear change now, and very 'jap' smooth.

HI,
Cheers for that. Will try bleeding the clutch. I have ordered the 0.4 oil valve so have that as a back up plan when it arrives.

Regards Steve

Hopefully it'll be the cure mate, took it out on Saturday to one of my favourite roads ( cat and fiddle nr buxton ) to get a comparison against my Gixer600, once the clutch had been sorted I had the confidence to see what the mille was about, only had the bike a couple of weeks and was'nt that inspired by the high seat height, the lumpy power delivery or the input needed to get the bike on it's side, however after a bit of commitment the bikes absolutely awesome, just took me a bit of time to get to grips with the power delivery compared to the inline fours that I've ridden, looking back now what was missing was the character and grunt that the mille has, taking it on track at Anglesey later this month to see what it can do, as long as the reliability holds up from now on I don't think I'll be getting rid of this bike for a long time:thumbup

Hi,
Gave mine its first thrashing on Saturday. Left home at around eight and got back at eleven with a grin a mile wide. Love the grunt the bike has. Had both three and four cylinders in the past and this is different but once you get in the groove its just mind blowing. Had 150 out of it and the noise is so sweet. Like you do not think I will be changing this bike for a while.

Regards Steve

Mine always does that false neutral thing - I hate it when you are going round a bend and it rattles between gears. You always get a rear wheel wriggle when it clunks back in but the trick is not to panic.

feck, that aint good mate, and probably not the way you want to get ur adrenaline fix, have you had it back to the dealer ?

sounds like just the sort of morning that I had mate,a grin a mile wide:biggrin

They were supposed to have cured the need for bleeding the clutch. My '08 Factory needs doing about once a month. Easiest way to do it is a cable tie around the clutch lever and bar, piece of rag or kitchen roll over the bleed nipple on the master cylinder and slacken the nipple just enough to let the air and a tiny bit of fluid out, tighten nipple, cut cable tie, jobs a goodun.
By the way, I've never had a problem with finding neutral and this particular Aprilia has the sweetest gearbox I have ever used(that includes Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha)

Hi,
Sorry to be so dumb. Have found the bleed nipple, the bit with the rubber cap over it? How do I open it to bleed?

Regards Steve

11mm open ended spanner, don't forget to cover with paper towel or similar.
