I remember sometime ago probably on another Forum site I read a thread about why the clutch fluid went black so quickly. Apart from the odd rouge answer the general conclusion was that it was the clutch seal braking down and being absorbed into the system.

The simple remedy was to sear the seal with a special grease that did not contaminate the fluid but acted as a barrier between the seal and the fluid and according the masses it seemed to alleviate the problem.

I have a new seal and I am about to replace the fluid but I can't remember what sort of grease to use. Does any know what grease I should use and also, if it is a specialised grease where can I get hold of some?

Can't say I've ever heard of this special grease mate. The fluid does darken as it tends to on Ducatis as well. If the clutch/brake works OK I wouldn't worry about the colour of the fluid. I've just changed to a Daytona 675 and my brother has a 2 year old model, his brake fluid is noticeably darker than mine on the Triumphs as well.
 
It's partially right otherwise the same seals in the brake would turn black if it were simply seal type.

Simple answer is heat and stroke. The clutch fluid gets cooked from heat transfer to the slave which increases the speed it absorb moisture.
Also the long stroke of the clutch relative to the brake etc means the piston rubbing the seals/bore transfers aluminium particles from the internal surface of the slave/Mc into the fluid which mixes with the moisture and turns black.

If you wet you finger and rub untreated aluminium you usually find your finger will turn black and that's what happens to the fluid.

Not sure grease would last very long if you used it but you could try. High temp fluid slows the process a little.
 
it's called red rubber grease. castrol make it to lubricate seals like the one your replacing, can't verify it fixing the dark fluid tho.
 
I think I'll just replace the seal and leave the grease well alone. No point contaminating the system unnecessarily.
