Clutch Fluid Leak

Ok just nursed the bike home after realising the clutch resevoir was empty:confused, bled the system to try and find the leak, I'm pretty sure its coming from the slave cylinder so I need to get a new slave cylinder seal.

I really want to avoid going through aprillia cause I would like to get it fixed before next weekend, so is there anywhere I can get one quickly, or any other bikes that share the same part.

Also having bled it to the point where it'll be useable for a little while, what is the danger getting fluid on the clutch or contaminating the engine oil.

Me too. Just tried to go out for a ride and there isd no fluid showing. There is nor enough fluid to allow the lever to work the clutch at all.

Im having an MPL cylinder soon but will need to get the bike there to be done.

Can you just pop some fluid in as a quick fix? Or will i need to bleed it?

you need to bleed it cause it'll probably have air bubbles in it. I've bled it to the point where it is working fine, but don't know how long it will be before i'm in the same situation.

The thing i'm worried about is any of the fluid could find its way into the clutch, if i continue to use it, and what kind of damage that could do

Im no expert so cant advise you. I am taking mine in this week to have a service and the slave cylinder done plus a few other bits.

Hope you sort it.

Same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Managed to get home just, then there was nothing at the clutch lever.
Fortunately the bike was still under warranty, just. The mechanic from the local dealer came out to the house, did a quick bleed and was able to ride it back to the dealers. (approx 3 miles away)
Can't be a big job. He took the bike at 3.30 pm on the Friday and it was ready to be picked up at 11.30am the following day.
As for how long you could ride it by giving it a bleed I wouldn't know. Depends on how badly it's worn. Good luck.

ok so this must be a common problem i'm guessing, i've had my mille just over a week and it has exactly the same symtoms nothing at the lever. is the part actually that hard to replace your self and i know aprilia after service is shocking so is there anywhere else i can order a slave cylinder from ???

Gents,

Same thing happened to mine but don't get paranoid it happens to Suzukis as well.

I asked Griff if he had any but he put me on to

http://www.kickstartmotorcycles.uk.com/

they held seals in stock and posted me by return.

They recommended changing the push-rod seal in the piston as well so got one of those as well.

Total price of 2 seals + 1st class post = £17.97 by return

I was well chuffed as my local Aprilia dealer is a waste of space,I'll go back to kickstart for postal spares again, their response could not have been better.

How much of this is down to Griff phoning them on my behalf to check the stock situation is unknown, but hey, they delivered.:thumbup:thumbup

sound appreciate that i'll give them a try, are they hard to replace your self ? im not daft but hardly a mechanic ?

Not difficult at all mate. The only awkard bit I found was when you come to undo the holding screws.

You will find a rubber bung on the end of a tube that sticks out from the slave cyl and supports the belly pan, remove the bung and you'll see a cap (allen) head screw down in the depths. You may need some effort to unscrew this as they are prone to corroding the steel screw to the alloy tube.

When you come to reassemble clean any crap out of the tube and give the bolt a coating of anti-seize (Copa-slip or Copa-eze).

The actual strip and replacement of the seals is quite straightforward,I would recommend smearing the piston and bore with RUBBER grease designed for O rings etc (there are posts an the subject if you search)

There are also posts to lead you thru the bleeding procedure, although to be honest it was so straightforward I couldn't see why people struggle, perhaps I just got lucky.

If you find you need any help just shout and I'll do my best to help.

Cheers IanG :thumbup just phoned him, tells me thats the second set he's sold today:), I should have mine tomorrow morning.:doug

lol snap thats cuz i ordered the 1st set this morning getting mine tomorrow to and thinking ive got a slight weep on the master cylinder =(. the bleedings easy read the haynes manuel n its a 5-10 min job if that but i want to try back filling with a medical syringe like ive seen posted on here is that any better? and cheers ian big help

Im doing the syringe method tomorrow to get it to Griff. Having MPL put on amongst lots of other things

ah that looks like a good bit of kit might give it a whirl =), as for a mpl slave where can i get one from is it an internet jobby or secific shop ?

I cant get this kit to operate, it just sucks air from the bleed screw surrounding(the bubles newer stop :D). Heard many complaints from others also.

I prefer the springe method or just do it the old fashion way.

yeah i get the bubbles coming through, but was told that there not coming from within the system, its more because the hose dosen't make a perfect seal on the bleed nipple. I use it to get the worst of the old fluid through then finish by just puming the brake/clutch lever. Haven't any complaints about the results it gives.

The mpl slave comes from germany you can order throught their ebay store
http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/mpl-tuning/
Will be getting one myself as a long term solution.

So its useles :D

I also use it for emptying the system, but its not what this kit was made for.

Get the mpl if you can, it doesnt make a whole lot of diference, but it does a little and you are worry free. +it looks cool :D

If you want to get it cheaper, search this forum, someone here aranged a discount, which was realy nice of him :)
