Clutch bleeding

Ok here goes with my first post on any forum ever!!!!!!!!! My RSV started developing what i can only describe as a"floppy" clutch lever which eventually resulted in not being able to change gear! Well..not strictly true i was still able to do so by balancing the revs and using a little more force!!! :eek: - to get home from a mates. So i guess clutch but after some guidance i have also been advised that as there is very little hydraulic pressure with the lever then it could be that system may actually just need bleeding but as I have already ordered new friction plates as they needed changing anyway its not a problem to replace them (might as well!). However i have read so many threads regarding bleeding the clutch i am a little confused so can one of you out there just give me a simple, definitive - AND EASY - way to bleed the system? Never had to do it on my Harley as the clutch works with a cable (so much easier!)! I know where the clutch slave cylinder is on the bike and it seems to have a bleed nipple on it so is it pretty much the same as bleeding the brakes or is there another trick to it - just want to be sure before i start! thanks all!
 
1.take off bleeding nipple cover
2.attach tubing on bleeding nipple (put a ringed spanner on 1st)
3.open clutch resivour.
4.pull in clutch lever and hold.
5.loosen off bleeding nipple.
6.tighten nipple back up
7. release clutch lever
8.repeat, repeat, repeat.

tip-keep an eye on fluid level in resivour make sure it does not go too low and put air in the system
 
Some ppl use a syringe and pump the fluid in backwards..through the bleed nipple and into the reservoir..

I did mine yesterday with a bit of rubber tube knotted at one end and a slit cut in it and the end in an empty coke bottle... Then as v twin luke said above!!
 
thanks chaps - as i thought pretty much as doing the brakes. Yeh read a few other threads regarding this syringe business! But think i will try the old trusted method first!! Much appreciated all of you,
 
Where you losing clutch fluid too? the clutch slave seals are a known weak point.

Depending on what model of RSV you have you may have a bleed point on the master cylinder too.
If not you can loosen the banjo on the master cylinder while holding the clutch lever to let out an bubbles that accumulate higher in the clutch system.

Just watch you don't get any fluid on your paint work :s
 
Ha - if you saw my "paint work" rumple you would know that its probably the one thing that doesnt really bother me!!!! :biggrin - but in answer to your question i have a standard RSV Mille on a "52" plate and no wasn't losing any fluid at all - cylinder was full and still is but only bleed point is the nipple on the salve! Bought a new set of friction plates anyway so will replace old ones and then try combo of above methods see which one works best.
As i have just the standard RSV i am looking to do a few easy "mods" to improve acceleration, handling etc so if any of you out there have any suggestions on what can be done at reasonable cost (am pretty competent on the mechanical front so it'll be more the costs of parts etc) then let me know!!!
 
Is the bike de-restricted 1st of all??

For better accel you could alter the gearing, and look at doing the collector pipe mod, install a chip - gabros or dr rossis are usually considered the best and open airbox and can...

These can be pretty cheap mods i just got the aprilia ti evo exhaust off ebay for 50quid. Cips are around 75euros, currently i have just opened the standard airbox but plan on getting one of tash's soon..

ha! Hello mate - no escape!!! :eek:D yep got the plates today dude and with your advise and all the others should be pretty straight forward! I can see me spending far too much money with you lot!!! :eek:D
