Clicking and tacho flicking when connecting the battery

Guys

I have had the usual RSV electrical problems i.e. wont start first go, cutting out...blah blah. I replaced the starter solenoid with the 150 amp version and have replaced the battery. After I replaced the solenoid the bike was starting up better however on my commute the bike just stopped dead about 2 miles from my work (i had to push it through central london!). I have replaced the battery which seems to have helped but I am worried it is going to cut out again. My main concern is that when I connect the battery I get a clicking sound and the tacho flicks up about 7 or 8 times before stopping. I was wondering if anyone has had this specific problem and knows how to fix it?

Thanks guys. Also, I am doing a quick early morning back by lunchtime burn this saturday (if the weather is any good) from west london to brighton if anyone is interested.

Cheers
Justin

It is normal for it to click like that when you attach the earth lead to the battery (earth alway first off and last on) I have just replaced the battery and I also added an extra earth lead from the battery earth directly to the starter motor housing and have had no problems at all with starting since doing so.

My bike does the clicking tacho thing every time I turn the ignition off. The bike runs fine and the battery is charging okay. Is this normal?

Thanks valendino. I really thought the clicking tacho must be part of my electrical woes. Well, hopefully the new solenoid and new battery will fix all :)
Cheers

This doesen't sound normal at all, you could try running the extra earth strap from the negative terminal on the battery straight down to the starter motor housing and see if that makes a diffence, if so it is an earthing problem and if not you may need an auto sparky to check it out.:dunno

Yep had the same clicking tacho thing when I changed battery.....just an Italian style thing I guess!

mine did this when battery went flat on starting once. Then rev counter was out. If you keep on touching earth lead on and off you can get rev needle back round where it should be.

I found one of the starter soleniod connectors was loose. Tightening it lessend the clicking. It still clicks went i turn the igniton off, but the tacho needle barely moves now.

I stuck a voltmeter across the battery and i`m getting a good 14v+, so at least it`s charging properly.
