Choice of track bike - which one of these??

O

OZMILLE

Hi Guys

Well almost have the Mille back on the road, just this f&%king indicator problem, another time for that.

The missus (great thing that she is) has given the ok to fund a track bike, as I cant bare the thought of accidently putting the RSV down the track I have a few choices which are old within the low/high end of budget.

WHAT DO YOU THINK??

1. Yamaha YZF750 1994-96 (My 1st choice)
2. Kawasaki ZX7R 1996-99
3. Honda CBR900-919 1994-98
4. Suzuki GSXR750 1996-99
5. Kawasaki ZX9R 1998-99 (2nd Choice)

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD CONSIDER AROUND THE SAME PRICE, remember I am 6'3 so no ZXR250 etc.

Cheers Pete :thumbup

Gixxer750 my 1st choice.
YZF750 my 2nd choice, but for around 1500 or so you could get a 2000/2001 R1 track bike or similar

Look at this

I would still go for the zx7.

Hi mate

YEP, was watching that a few hours ago. :thumbup

Why still the ZX7R???????, too heavy to be quick, although handles well enough and very planted.

KIWI choice is good, I had the 96 GIXXER when it 1st came out, 114RWHP with a pipe on it.

I also owned the YZF750, so much the better engine until 10,000 RPM, felt like a 1000 compared to the Suzuki which was peaky as all F&%K.

Early R1 can be a problem, trying to find one with a decent gearbox, let alone clutch.

Still looking though, open to others suggestions. :thumbup

A friend of myne had it for racing, would regulari kick newer 1l bikes, ducatis 999 were droping behind him like flyes :D, so the zx7 is still a fast bike, it just needs to be man-handled

Or Ill go for the gsx750, also very good "riding propreties" (you would newer tell from the fat looks), also it has a very strong engine, the fastest from the ones you gave. I just dont know if it has carburators or injections, carburators are better.

Video he took with the zx7, check his other videos.

Others from you list:

1. Yamaha YZF750 1994-96 (have you been drinking?)
2. Kawasaki ZX7R 1996-99
3. Honda CBR900-919 1994-98 (nooooo)
4. Suzuki GSXR750 1996-99
5. Kawasaki ZX9R 1998-99 (if you like riding cows :))

Actualy I would do it like this, RSV are cheap now, buy a crashed standard one that has nothing bent. You will have to replace the fairing anyway, you dont need lights, mirrors and so on, shouldnt cost much.

Or one more suggestion, buy a normal mille. Sell the parts you dont need, you should get quite some money for original fairings, lights, switches, back seat...

ZX7 = Fantastic planted front end, Historic mid range AND its a KAWASAKI

I sold my 96 Red one 2 years ago and bought the RSV, I recently bought a ZXR in March for £820 FFS, that same stupid Grin is on my Face again :)

What a Bike and the growl froom the Airbox / Exhaust is Great

My mate has a ZX7R that we turned into a track bike, spent ages getting the weight down , but in the end it was too small even for my 6 foot (in heels) height, but yes it was quick enough and handled incrediably well (better than a 10 year plus old bike should).

My R1 had heavy duty gears from I think Nova Racing (?) which I got from ebay USA for silly money, but yes 98-01 R1's do have that weak 2nd gear problem.

Dolenc's idea of a track RSV sounds bloody good to me, pick up a later than 00 model (single plug big valve engine) and follow his instructions !!

Hey Guys

Point taken about the ZX7R, definately the looker of the bunch. A Mille will still cost way too much, remember bikes are not as cheap here in Australia guys :)

OK, so down to the ZX7R or the GSXR750 96-99, what the hell happened to the YZF750, seems a good bike, I know the motor is better then the ZX7R so how come the low blows???? Its not that bad is it, I dont remember anything bad (aprat from front brakes)

Cheers Pete

For the track, if you are not top 3 material, you need something that is the most stable and rides calm, to go fast and to keep up with newer bikes. Not dancing allover the track :D

Thats why italian bikes are good on the track, they newer been the lightest or strongest, but are stable. Which is good for an avarage rider.
Engine wise it doesnt matter, you will be down on power no matter how you look at it, just like everybody on a mille :D

Suzuki and Kawa were the bike to beat at that time. Try both if you can and the one that feels right to you, go for it.

If you wanna go fast... it's gotta be the Gixxer everyday.. if you wanna look good.. take the 7R....
having owned both.. the Gixxer is a much easier bike to ride fast on a track.

Just my opinion

Thanks guys, at least its getting narrowed down.

No CBR900, however everyone is ignoring the YZF750 :devious

Surely somebody has something good to say about the bike??

If youre talking about a YZF750SP, then .. sure.. why not
The standard bike had some massive flaws.. brakes, forks, rear shock to name just three,
don't get me wrong.. i have fond memories of the amazing cocktail colour schemes.. but in the company you are looking at..(GSXR and ZX7R) its an inferior machine
:dowhat

OK, point taken :unhappy

I'd agree on the Gixer. I had a '98 one and electrical gremlins in the wet aside (probably not an issue for a track bike) it was fantastic.

Mind you the 7R is a quality track tool as well. Some friends of mine ran on in endurance a few years back and had some decent results.

Ok, heres what digging up has left me with.

I can get a ridgy didge 1994 YZF750SP (yes the SP) in fantastic condition which has all the ohlins gear, much better front over the standard YZF750R amongst other trick bits like tall 1st gear and close ration gearbox etc :devious

It would be half the money the RSV has cost me, so heres the question.

Do I track the YZF750SP, or take all the carbon and other goodies off the RSV and use her for the track???????

You know that there are some things that cant be solved on a forum :D

C,mon Dolenc :dunno

I found the SP and must have it, cant sleep anymore.........DROOL

I will endeavor to have my cake and eat it, however the SP could be a nightmare in traffic with its 85mph 1st gear......

Just need to ride it like an RS250 :pirate

Cheers Pete
