Checking sprag clutch

Had a few issues with the starting of my bike recently. Had the horrible grunching noise from the sprag clutch.

Is there a way to tell if the sprag clutch is worn without stripping the whole thing down ?

My understanding is, if it's making nasty noises it's pretty much screwed.....what I would say mate is, don't leave it too long before getting sorted, I'd hate anyone to experience what I did when my sprag clutch went bye-bye...finding rather large bits of metal from the circlip in your engine oil is a sure fire way of finding the blood drain away from all but the most important organs of your body!

Ta dude,

Its only ever made that noise 2 or three times in the 4 years ive had the bike ?

Once when i first had the bike cos the battery was shagged, and only recently cos again the battery is shagged. Is it a part that goes gradually or will it just stop working one day ?

Sounds like you don't have a major problem...mine was making a clicking/whiring noise on a regular basis. I would suggest that when starting you don't rev it up, just let it start on the button, this apparently reduces wear on the sprag clutch. I wouldn't worry too much about it as yet just try & keep the battery tip-top so there's enough juice to turn her over and it shouldn't be a problem!

Hoping thats the case !!!

Just got a new battery and the uprated starter solenoid so im hoping this will help. Am i right in thinking the best way to start a Mille is using the fast idle lever (some people call it the choke ?), and no throttle ?

That whole sprag clutch mechanism is way scary. What a horrible sight you describe New Boots.

I use the speed-idle for cold starts. By cold starts, I mean until 55c aprox. I never ever touch the throttle when starting the bike and I've noticed that below 55c the bike is a bit reluctant to fire up without a bit of choke because the tick over is too low. I was advised by southercross not to be shy with the start push button and don't release until the bike has fired up. So far so good.

That sounds fine for the older models, but the newer 03.9 onwards don't have the fast idle feature!! :thumbup

yup, no throttle turn and use fast idle (which is also an ace 'cruise control BTW!) when it needs it
CK

i'd rekon that depends on what ya call cruise speed CK lmao :biggrin

means you can scratch yer arse with both hands at 165mph on the autobahns:devious

I wondered how my mate was 'hands off' and still going fer glory at 165 ..til I saw him playing withthe choke(oops I mean'fast idle' lever.

Hey man don't sweat it....I was assisting Sharky with his bike a while ago and started fiddling with this 'choke' thingy and thought what a novelty...why hasn't mine got one!:devious Derrr! a bit of an upgrade on the newer models made this obsolete:biggrin

i never knew the newer models never had a fast idle controller, i bet thats a ***** to start then or is it all automatic?
