Hey folks,

Anyone do their tyre changes themselves at home?

Thinking of buying the kit myself to save time and money in the long run. The equipment I think I need is:

1. Bead breaker
2. Tyre levers
3. Balancing tool
4. Tyre soap
5. Weights

There are loads of 'How To' posts in other forums on how to make your own bead or make do with a vice etc.
Tyre levers, soap and weights can be gotten cheap of ebay.
I also found this on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STW-Motorcycle-portable-wheel-balancer-Machined-Axle-/310226108784?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item483aeac170 anyone have this tool? Looks like a good idea to me and cheap as well:thumbup
Or should I pay a bit extra and get the proper stand http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STWN-Motorcycle-portable-wheel-balancer-Machined-Axle-/310330304683?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item484120a8ab ??
Any thoughts or experiences?

Gonna try it myself when the time comes.
I plan to get heavy duty wire cutters to cut thru both beads of the old tyre and cut it in half. the old tyre can then be lifted off reducing the chance of scratching the rims during removal. Old tyre is going in the bin anyway.
Keep us posted how you get on.

I've got this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TYC-MOTOR...07?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item483b0b7503.

18 inch tyre levers, and all the other stuff you list, you'll also need some of these to protect yer rims from yer tyre levers http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOTORCYCL...85?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item1c12ad25d1 i got two pairs.
Oh and some of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-STRIPS-...35?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item33614b3c7f unless you have a friend at ATS as i do , lol. And paddock stands of course.
Easy enough job to do, the more times you do it the better you get, just take yer time, oh and you'll get yer mates wanting a borrow as well, lol.

That Abba kit does look smart however I wonder if your just paying for the name. THink I'll go with the cheaper stuff cos I think I could get all the required equipment for about £120.
I'm currently paying £20 to change a pair of wheels at my local garage so I only need to do it six times to start earning money back. Plus I can help the boys fitting their wheels for beer tokens.
