Changing the front end!!!!!

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the Mille world after owning Ducatis for the last 3 years!!!

I thought Dukes were a mess underneath the fairing...but, damn my RSV could give it a run for its money!!!

My question is....

I have a standard front end(showa) on my 2001 Mille and i will be in receivership of some Ohlins forks and yokes in the next day or so!! Have any of you removed both the forks and yokes at home??? I'm just wondering how the hell i can get the front end off the floor so i can also remove the showa yokes!!! Any ideas???? Rather do it myself than take it to the garage!!!

My 748 was a doddle to do as cylinder layout posed useful(for proping the front end up) whereas the V60 layout of the RSV gives me no solid perch!!

Help!!!!

Gav.

Welcome mate the only thing i can suggest is to hang it from above (i will not be held responsible for any damage to your bike or the garage from this reply haha):thumbup

Hello Gav and welcome :thumbup How do you compare the RSV to the 748 riding wise etc. I nearly went for a 748 myself before I got the mille.

The RSV is more comfortable and has a better road stance whereas the 748 just oozes nothing but race pedigree...meaning...its a killer on long journeys and holds a line really well!!!

Stick with your Showa's mate :thumbup

I would but the left hand fork has a nasty gash on the nitride section and its oozing fluid everywhere....

Managed to get the Ohlins forks and bottom yoke for £350...so a bit of a bargain???

Check out the thread that Badger has just put on mate, sounds like he could help ya :thumbup

you'll get used to stripping the forks out as apparently they eat seals, ohlins that is, ive just bought one with 6K on and they psssssd oil out, apprilia dealer says common problem. i hung mine from garage roof with rear paddock stand.

Not sure about the RSV but I put a set of radials on my TL last year, do you have an Abba stand :O

I put mne on an Abba then put a bottle jack under the engine then just for safey I put some ropes around the rafters in my garage, went without incident

sorry fellas i dont know if ths has been talked about before on here but,ive read somewhere that suzuki gsxr1000 fork seals are the same as ohlins just a lot cheaper, they must be oe suzuki seals not pattern parts as those will be ****.so if you've got a set of leaky ohlins, its got to be worth a try :thumbup

My old '98 Mille had the stock Showa's junked and fitetd with a spangly set from a Duke 996.
Worked very well and looked different too....

Cheers guys!

Looks like i will have to go for broke and play it by ear....anyone know if a standard showa top yoke will fit the Ohlins fork??

Gav.

Am i right in saying that i can still mount the forks with the standard 5 spoke wheels??

Nice little read...

So i need an Ohlins top yoke and Ohlins clip-ons....anybody got any they dont want??

Gav.

Make sure and post on these forums that you are looking for the parts. Anytime I'm looking for something people usually contact me wanting to sell me theirs! I updated my little thread on my Ohlins thread on www.fourwheelforum.com with a final picture and some thoughts. The torque is different between the Showa and Ohlins assemblies.

ALSO the brake caliper mounting bolts are different between the two. The Ohlins uses shorter/smaller diameter allen bolts as apposed to regular bolts. I thought I was going to be riding my bike then at the end when I was putting the calipers on I was pretty bummed to see that I needed the allen bolts. You can grind down the edges of the regular bolts but it's near impossible to get a 13mm socket in the recessed area to torque them down. It worked temporarily for a quick ride thought. :devious
