Changing rear sprocket - how easy?

I had a new chain and rear sprocket put on by my local dealer on Saturday. The rear sprocket is a bronze coloured hard anodised Renthal which I thought would be fine until I saw a bike fitted with a sexy Supersprox rear sprocket. Bottom line is that I have now ordered a Supersprox and I wondered how difficult it would be to change the sprocket myself. I've got a socket set and torque wrenches etc but I've never removed a rear wheel before. If I follow the instructions in the manual would it be within the scope of an average person? Are there any potentail pitfalls I should be aware of? :dunno

Any advice greatfully received!

Easy job mate, no probs at all.

Can be a bit of a bugger getting the back wheel in place with the rear caliper fitted, I find it easier to drop the caliper off first and fit last.

Don't be tempted to hit your spindle with a hammer when refitting, it should slide in easily. If it doesn't, remove it and lube it up with some grease.

While you have the wheel out and sprocket off check your cush drive rubbers, they do harden and crack with age.

Lastly, use new lock nuts on the caliper, never re use lock nuts. You can buy them dirt cheap off Ebay.

Its dead easy mate
Remove rear caliper and tie up out the way
Loosen rear wheel nut
Put up on paddock stand
Slack of the chain adjusters to minimum
Push back wheel as far forward as it can go, chain should be able to be removed from sprocket
Undo nut and remove axle , remove back wheel, watch out for spacers and rear caliper bracket, Oh put something on the floor like news paper for the chain to sit on
Pull sprocket carrier from back wheel
Undo sprocket nuts, you will need a spanner on the backside of the nut
Remove sprocket, fitting is the reverse

Thanks Guys. I've read through the workshop manual a couple of times and I reckon I'll give it a go. :thumbup

Rob

That's very kind of you to offer. The sprocket came today and looks a damn sight more sexy than the Renthal! :inlove P.M me to advise when it might be convenient for you. There's a case of beer here with your name on it! :thumbup

PM sent my friend. No need for the beer, I love any excuse to get my hands dirty:devious

Yes it does have a happy ending...well I'm happy. Had arranged for TinTin to change the sprocket for me but it was too good a day weather wise to waste messing around in the garage so went out on the bike instead. Decided to have a go myself when I got home and 30 minutes later the job was done. :biggrin

Thanks to everyone for their encouragement. :thumbup

Well I don't think I'll be doing the valve clearances just yet but it's a good feeling doing it yourself...doesn't cost and you know the jobs been done. :biggrin

I hope you're not winding me up Sprocker? I've put it on with the wavey black pattern facing to the nearside of the bike which is how I've seen every other one mounted. :dunno
