Changed oil and now won't start :(

Only had the 2001 Mille-R a few weeks and she's started first touch no probs since having the new solenoids fitted.

Dicided to change the oil so I warmed her up yesterday (started no probs) and left the oil draining over night.

Added 3.5 liters of new oil today and wanted to run her a min before checking level, but she won't start :(

Turns over before flooding eventually, battery is showing 12.1v but have tried with the jump leads connected to the car, still no joy, even after cleaning plugs etc....

Any ideas as I'm pulling my hair out here

Thanks in advance

hmm have you tried throttle while cranking ?

is this 12.1v at the dash ?

id think its simply wet plugs so give it some throttle when starting and see

Yep tried that, showing 12.1 on dash with ignition on only, just tried again on battery alone and it's turning over quite slowly, then the rev counter did a funny flickering and ticking sound?

Could it be the battery is shot?

In that case should it not start with the jump leads?

12.1 is pretty low voltage and the clicking rev counter is your bike resetting it's self back to basic settings because the battery is low.
Charge your battery up over night or piggy back off your car battery again before attempting to start again.
If you have a garrage get the bike in there and let it warm up providing it's heated, for a few hours.
Check to see if you can hear your fuel pump kicking in/ priming when you turn the ignition on. If not then theres your problem.
Try starting with no cold start applied and full throttle for only a few seconds. If it doesn't then stop, leave it a few minutes and try the same again. If it still doesn't start then try checking this below but if you turn yourself into a human fire ball or burn the family home down then I will deny all knowledge of this and claim the dog wrote it! ha ha
Take a spark plug out of one cylinder and push it back in its supressor cap. Now completely remove the supressor cap from the other spark plug ON THE SAME CYLINDER this is so the fuel in this cylinder doesn't ignite and melt your face off!!!
Touch the bottom of the spark plug which has the supressor cap fitted to it, against some bright metal (not your frame) a bolt head etc
With your face away from open spark plug holes BRIEFLY touch the starter and check to see if there is a spark being created probs best to do this in poor light so you can see this easier. Only try this briefly as you don't want petrol everywhere while you're holding a pretty sparkly thing in your hand :D
If there is then it's a fueling problem you've got- either flooding (if it stinks of fuel) or starvation if it doesn't.
If there isn't a spark then you need to check the relevant connections

the battery is suffering for sure.

if you had a reading of 12.1v off the bat with a multi meter it would mean its knackered.
the reading off the dash will seem low as its showing the power after ignition is on so lights etc have taken some power.

i had similar cranking issues and found the side stand switch wiring was damaged at the stand so check that

also check the earth strap is good (i added another )

the solenoid can also give starting issues and make it stutter (also low battery causes same thing )

if you can fully charge the bat and leave bike it to dry out if its been flooding .

see what happens in the morning with a full charge

Cheers for that

Battery is on constant charge with the optimate, just in the process of ordering an uprated battery and a new set of plugs and see if that does the trick?

Can't understand it, it been spinning up fine previously?

If it doesn't I'll try the above

Thanks again!!

a man after my own heart!
I've made a 'taper' for this specific reason, take a 12" length of coathanger wire, wrap a very small strip of cotton onto one end and secure it properly with lockwire or similar. Add a few drops of parrafin or diesel even, and you're good to go. Light the cotton, and apply it to the open plughole. You'll hear a WHOOSH!! as the flooded cylinder burns itself clear.
But as you've already said, keep your man parts well out of the way, and whatever you do....make sure there's no loose fuel, or loose fuel lines.

Oh yeah, and if you are stupid enough to give this a shot, YOU ACCEPT ALL LIABILITY :lol

Uprated battery fitted, cold start to full, no throttle, pop, bang bang ....... Running

Showing 13.9 on dash no lights and 13.4 with lights, normal I hope?

Happy happy again now

Happy days, well done mate. Yeh that voltage sounds about right to me. I know there's a mod people do to increase the charging voltage but I've never had any issues so left well alone. I think you said you have an optimiser? that's all you need really.

Just a quickie on this bud........go steady with jumping from a car battery as it can easily spike the ecu and completely **** it!!! Glad its sorted now though.

Glad shes going matey Just one thing though you sure the side stand switch isnt playing up , just wondering as when you removed the bottom fairing you may have knocked the switch , they are known to play up intermittently

eddie

It's something I intend to check out as I've noticed the casing is cracked on the switch, does it just pull out?

Just bypass the sidestand switch then you want have to worry about it crapping out while out riding ... First thing I do to all my customers bikes when brought to me ..
