Chains..............No Tim not the bondage type :devious

If you could not afford D.I.D but needed your bike on the road, what other brands would you consider ?

Also do you need a special link riveter for Tsaubaki chains as I have been led to believe ?

Kiwi, Down but not quite out thank's to the life raft he has been thrown by this forum :thumbup

I have always run tsubaki chains and they have been great.

A lot of chains don't have a soft link tsubaki included. You can do the link with a hammer but the potenital of messing up the link and having it tight is quite high or you need a hard link tool like the whale.

I use a setting tool that sets the plates to the correct width and then the whale tool to rivet the link pins.

This "whale" tool is obviously a differant beastie to the standard riveting tool used for say D.I.D chains and the likes ?

Yes it's a real quality bit of kit which will allow you to stake a hard link pin as many times as you like. Most hard link chains are staked on at least 2 sides and some on 4.

It takes 30 sec to stake one side with the whale. line it up and hit it with a hammer.
You can do it on your own with ease and you get to hit something with a hammer which is always a good experience.

I've lent it out a few times and everybody gives it back saying "wow what agreat piece of kit". B and c express recommend it over the DID tool which they also sell.

Based on budget I am going to have to get a "soft" link chain of some sort.

I think from B&C's website I will probably get their Renthal chain/sprocket kits.

I have the renthal chain on the mo...nice. also Tsubaki and Afam are great IME.
I dont use DID, have had two of them fail in the past (not on the RSV)
cheers Ck

Okay another question !!

520 or 525.....................the 520 setup costs about 12 quid cheaper than the 525, but what are the advantages/disadvantages ??

if you change to a smaller and lighter chain like the 520, you will certainly notice the difference in pick up. For me, I stayed with the 525 as I give the bike a good thrashing every day. Normally only recommended for race bikes etc where they are changed often. Plenty peeps use them on the RSV and have had no probs. I have had two DID chains snap on me, so I prefer the Std 525 set up, as it is chains and sprox don tlast me long(winter and wet weather riding) I expect I would be changing a 520 even earlier.

for longevity go with the 525 it'll last a lot longer than the 520 buit as CK says they're used on racebikes for less friction (I have honestly never noticed a difference in drag between the 2 but I'm not Vale ;) ).

Kiwi, I think I've still got a couple of brand new Renthal R4 SRS Gold Road Chains somewhere in the loft of the garage. P.M me if your interested, you could have one for what I payed for them. Just let me know how many links you require.
Cheers SPOOKY :ghostface
