Ok someone who has experience fitting their own chain & riveting please shed some light on this for me:

please ignore the slight scratching of the links either side, it is surface scratches only because i had to file some links down to cut the chain to size prior to fitment...

why the hell have the rivets cracked and just fallen apart like that?!
is it just because its a cheapo "heavy duty" x ring chain connection link?
the chain itself is DID but the connector link got fudged up in a similar fashion so i bought a replacement...

it looks like its pushed the pins out backwards?!

this is the chain tool i am using:

what the hell is going on here, this is hard enough without things falling apart on me all the time :rant

guess i will have to put this down to using cheap parts, so much for saving money..

note to self; cut chain to correct size before starting to fit the official connecting link.

the tool you used needs the "plug" thingy turned round the bit in the red needs to be where the green circle is ,so it cant push the pin through,I would replace that split link asap.pity your not closer as I have the correct riveting tool for a 530 chain.

yeah thats not a bad idea trying to put it in backwards, the tool is actually good for 520 525 and 530 or something.. has a variety of backplates etc

i already ripped the busted link off and ordered a replacement specific to the chain i bought.. so much for having my bike all back together and serviced in time for friday lol

The rivet only needs the head swelling just a touch as its an interference fit within the side plate. There's no wear taking place on the side of the chain so its not as if the rivet heads are going to be worn off allowing the con link to fail. Also if you've ground into the adjacent links it would be considered a stress raiser which is a weakness within the chain to the detriment of the other links as a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. It appears as if you've applied way too much pressure to the soft rivet heads. Try just riveting them enough so you can see they've visably swollen and no more. Also I think it may have already been said but you must not have not had the back plate in correctly as the pins have pushed through the link on the opposite side.
