Carbon fibre fuel tanks or bodykits!

Alright guys,

Not sure if you have seen my thread regarding carbon fibre tank pads but there is a small carbon fibre company near me that make some lovely carbon fibre parts. I have recently got a tank sheild from them and was pretty impressed to be fair.

Anyway, i have come up with an idea!

These guys are pretty much open to anything carbon fibre and are willing to do bespoke things etc, but they said the cost to make the parts from (moulds) can outweigh the viability cost for people to make bespoke things. But i thought, if we could demonstrate a decent level of interest for either bodykits or real carbon tanks, then they might make the moulds for us.

composite tanks or kits may not be of interest to any of use, but i thought it would be a cool part to have on the bike as it should shave a bit of weight from the bike and its high up weight also..

if this could be of interest ( dont worry dont expect anyone to commit ect) i will just put the idea across to them. These boys could do it no worries as they have worked in ultra high end motorsport inc WSB and F1, but most of the stuff they do isnt in motorsport or bikes but in sctructural parts, but i doubt it will phase them much, as they did mention that they might even do carbon wheels after checking the test laws etc.

Its only an idea at this stage, and they may tell me to f*ck off, but it would be cool to have a UK supplier of top spec composite parts for our bikes if they will do it, and the carbon is nice! My idea is to convince them of folk wanting them, and if they will cover the tooling costs, then parts will be cheaper. :devious

Will the CF tank be ok with fuel? And insurance, cos obvioulsy CF shatters, not dents, so in the event of an "off" there may be petrol spewing onto a hot engine....

Hi there,

Im just of the phone to a company in Hungary and they said the carbon would only shatter if it was solid carbon under high impact. They said the backing of the tank is normally made with kevlar as its hard as hell and wont puncture like carbon and has wicked abrasion resistance. they said kevlar is used in bullet proof vests for the same reasons..

As for weight it should be alot lighter im guessing and according to the guys it wont have a limited life span and will last the life of the bike. I think its like anything...if its made right, it will last. buy cheap crap and its just time and money wasted...

I think it might be worth looking into??????
