Caponord stopped running??

Hi fellow Capo owners. Was heading out for my first long ride on my 2013 Caponord 1200 today & it stopped. Just prior to this happening I was cruising at 85k's & the digital readout went back to zero speed?? Then the red engine warning light came on?? Bike started revving by itself as if twisting the throttle but no acceleration?? Anny Ideas on possible trouble as this is not a good way to start my relationship with this new toy. Thanks Ken.

I've read something about this....... but I had surgery yesterday and can't recall the details.

Best have a look at the 2014-2017 forum - I'm sure it has been covered in detail.

You have an old bike now....... has the battery been changed? Maybe the alternator is playing up (mine failed at 39,000kms and required rewind). Maybe the "droop sensor" is faulty - see the report from the mechanic at AF1 on the other forum.

The thing is very complex and will require the PADS system to diagnose the fault, but you could check the obvious things like loose battery connections.

Best wishes.......

Hey Mate, sorry to hear... If you need a PAD's hooked up, hop over to Springwood Suzuki, they used to be an Aprilia dealer and still have all the tools and expertise... and great bunch guys (ask for Ian)

I got my ECU updated recently to latest software revision and full check $140.... another "dealer" quoted me $340 for the same activity...

regards
phill.

Thanks for the advice fellas. Bike is pulled apart at team moto at the moment as they are the ones that sold me the bike. I did take out a extended warranty for piece of mind. The fault that is doing their heads in is intermittent so they are giving up & going to order complete replacement wiring harness & Loom. Interesting to see how long it's going to take for parts?? Have told shop already if it's going to be months they can have the bike back & I will pick something else of the same value if I have to. Will keep you all posted to the outcome. Ken.

G'day all, I agree with philbyracer...... I bought my TP from MRuS (Springwood - Tony Armstrong's) and they were excellent (until the new importer stuffed them around causing them to ditch the Aprilia dealership for Ducati).

I'd want them working on the Capo rather than the high pressure fast turnover culture at TM.

If you've had a read of the AF1 mechanic's posts (micah) in the other forum, you would've seen it has taken 5 years for a fully trained Aprilia tech to start to find out how the separate bits interact with each other...... eg the drop sensor causing weird alternator coil readings.

I doubt the TM crew will have any chance of diagnosing the fault as it will take too much time and they are not schooled on Aprilia's complex systems.

Maybe suggest they trailer the bike over to Tony's.........

Best wishes.

PS Head a bit clearer today..... the exhaust valve can stop working - causing the engine to go into 'limp home' mode........ most scrapped the controller motor for a Healtech ESE dongle and either left the standard pipe on with valve open or fitted a slipon muffer.

Must have Aprilia PADS system to set the cable tension/valve to spec.

PPs hoping the Doc's are getting ready to let me go free soon...... looking at 1/10/18 as start driving/riding as being a passenger in my own new car is nerve racking....... and my amazing 1290GT under a sheet........ :(

Good news BrisbaNord Tony Armstrongs are looking after Aprilia again as that's where my bike will eventually be going?? Dropped in at TM today to question them about whats going to happen & the said it will more & likely end up at there Aprilia Outside help which is at Nerang. Waiting to see outcome.

Good Luck CapoKen, hopefully its something simple.. As BrisbaNord mentioned the EXUP valve setup is **** (and common fault)... mine already gave grief within a few days owning... Added a Healtech (company at Dayboro imports them), and smooth sailing ever since.... PADs hookup will tell you what’s wrong then you can deal with it... Hopefully something minor and easy to solve..

Update on bike.. Replacement wiring harness & Loom ordered from Aprilia on backorder so now its a waiting game. At least its not costing me to fix it.

Hey phillbyracer. how would I know or tell if the Healtech thing has been done? Mine does have a after market slip on..

G'day C-ken......

Have a look at the lower front right side engine (ie near the oil filter)- that's where the servo motor is normally located. If it is missing and there is a 'dongle' attached to the wiring or frame, then that should be the ESE box.

Google healtech ESE for a picture to be certain. The exhaust valve was part of the oem muffler on Capo12 so if it's gone it should have the ESE dongle which tricks the ECU into thinking everything is in place. The cables & servo might have been left in place, with the ESE attached.

I didn't have mine long enough to clear the 2yr warranty period, but the ESE was going to happen once I was out from the Aprilia Umbrilia ;)

It scares me a little that they are replacing the wiring harness........ it is very complex and delicate........ I hope it works out but it would be a shame if it was just something like a drop sensor or O2 sensor or even just the ECU with a fault....... Best wishes for a good outcome.

Capoken, there is a really good video - google "healtech ESE for caponord 1200"......

it runs for 1min and clearly shows everything you will need....... it's the fitting muffler & ESE to capo12 clip

Hey phillbyracer. how would I know or tell if the Healtech thing has been done? Mine does have a after market slip on..

Hey CapoKen,
As per BrisbaNord’s links/search, there’s a few videos on how and where...

Here are the photo’s of mine installed... Key things to look for are:

1. Just before the Slip On sits the EXUP Valve, if the cables are missing/disconnected (like mine below) then you probably have a HealTech installed.
2. The Healtech module plugs into the loom where the servo was (follow cables if still fitted) and looks like this (photos below) sits lower RHS bike
3. If the cables connect to a big ugly mounted box, then you have the factory servo installed.... and historically problematic... (it has inside what looks like a cheap tiny scalextric’s motor and ****** plastic gears).... they break.

Fitting the Healtech will stop the EFi light coming on when the servo eventually craps itself... they all do... Also, the bike will be louder on idle (as the EXUP valve will be always wide open), and up to 4000RPM when the value used to be shut by the servo motor... (when it actually works..)

PS.. Apoloigies for the filthy bike condition, just got back from a Nebo run and it was pretty wet...

Thanks for the reply to my question I will have a look on Wednesday when I drop in at the Shop to check on how its going with my Bike. Just one other question of curiosity phillbyracer?? That 2nd photo with the little yellow sticker showing. do you know what that brownish looking plastic tube is & does it connect to anything as I did remember noticing that My Bike just has the little bit of metal pipe but nothing connected to it .
Thanks Ken.

Hi C-Ken...... sorry for jumpng in over Philby.......

I think that brownish pipe is an owner add on....... I did the same to my TP. I thought the pipe might have been overlooked at the factory...... but they are all without a drain tube.

If I'm not totally nuts .... I think that metal pipe is the water pump overflow. It might occasionally let a small drop of coolant/vapor out and doesn't really need a drain tube.........

Cheers and thanks for the offer on the R&G stuff......... sent you a PM reply today.

All Good Guys...
I'm honestly not sure... It was on the bike when I recently bought it... Given BrisBaNords comment and yours (that it doesn't have one)... It makes sense and would definitely say its an added drain tube.. Ive never seen anything come out of it, nor any residue noticed when washing the bike..
