Cam sensor (EFI and Triangle warning light)

So my bike has been plagued with the above warning lights. Had the cam sensor replaced once, and after that, about 2500 miles without incident. Just recently, the same code came up, Axone said it was the cam sensor again.

Bikes in the shop now. But was wondering if any of you had run into this same issue yet? If so, what was the fix?

Thx much....

ps, I did do a search, but couldn't find much info.

not a common fault at all.

dealers often uplug it during a service so maybe the connector has got damaged.

In the shop for the time being. I'll report back with results later. I've searched everywhere and couldn't really find anything on this at all. Even pm'd a guy at AF1 about it, but (Ed) never got back to me. I'm sure he's busy tho....

Bike is still in the shop. Mechanic is going to go through all of the electrical bits (ie: plug/unplug all wires) and see if that helps. I'm sure the cam sensor wasn't damaged. They replaced it last time it was in the shop.

I kindly asked the mechanic to replace the cam sensor again, but he said he didn't think Aprilia was going to allow it to be replaced again, and agian.

Is the bike still under warranty? :dunno If he doesn't think Aprilia is going to allow it to be replaced again and again, inspite of the Axone stating that it is at fault, are they/he going to delve deeper to discover the root of the problem? Sounds like a strange thing to say to me.

Cynical, but we've all heard or known of places that have broken things and then claim it isn't covered by the warranty.....which of course it wouldn't be if it was broken and not failed.....

Yep, I've the 07'. Just bought a couple of months ago. (actually, more like 4 months ago)Close to 6K miles on the clock.

Then if it is in warranty and the Axone says it is the cam sensor, then they have a duty to replace said cam sensor as well as tracing the potential cause of it's failure again. They must have a way of checking the sensor to see what type of failure it has experienced? :dunno

The cam sensor was replaced under warranty once already. The mechanic said he'd research the issue with Aprilia, and see what they would want to do in order to correct the issue. As far as the mechanic is concerned, the mechanic was fresh out of ideas as to what was causing it. Thus, will disconnect, and reconnect all wires in hope that this fixes the issue. I'll just have to wait and see if anyone else on this board has run into the same issue before, or wait till I get the bike back and talk with the mechanic I referred to earlier.

i searched most of the forums when you first posted to see if anyone had a problem before and found just 1

That was caused by dealer mechanic not plugging it back in properly after a service.
It would seem it's highly uncommon so the chances of you having 2 faulty parts in quick succession are low. On that basis it's either got a dodgy connection or something is damaging it or you are very unlucky

Either way it's not your problem if it's under warranty. They give it back to you working end of. How that happens is up to them to sort out with Aprilia. Be polite but don't part with any of your hard earned over it.

If all else fails ring Griff and ask him to have a word in the ear of Aprilia. :devious

Much thanks Spoonz. I'll be sure to write out a complete and thourough report when I get it back.

As Spoonz says its very rare or unlucky that your going to suffer a cam sensor failure twice on one bike i would have thought, but, not impossible. Let the dealer change the sensor, it will be covered by warranty although there may be complications with the warranty claim., the dealer should be able to work round this though to sort it for you, this is the next logical step.
If the issues does return again and also some remedial checks would be to start tweaking the loom around the sensor to see if this has any effect on the fault code reader section of the Axone, its real time so if there is any fault in the loom it should pick it up almost straight away!
let me know if i can help?
Griff

Much thanks guys! I'll be sure to report back as soon as I get the bike back.

-anxiously waiting.

Well, here's correspondence I got from the mechanic. Not sure what he did, but the problem hasn't come back yet.... (just picked the bike up yesterday. So haven't got a chance to really get on it yet.

Here's the first email that I got from him:
Mechanic said:
Currently I am performing tests on the gang connector associated with the ECU. I have not yet located a possible cause of this problem.
The symptom is not present at this time. The error is not inherent to the software design as I originally suspected.
If I don’t find a wiring problem I might loan you a different ECU to see if that makes a difference.

And here's the email that I got from him last night:
Mechanic said:
I have cleaned out all connections between the cam sensor and the ECU. I have found a bit of moisture at the ECU connector. There is a chance that this might solve the problem.
The only way are going to find out is by you riding the bike. If this error reoccurs we’ll swap the ECU.
In other words come on over and pick the bike up for test riding!

Bike seems to be running just perfectly. No probs whatsoever. But how in the hell does water get in there? When the EFI light/triangle warning light went off, rain hadn't touched it for weeks.
