caliper touching the disc

Hi all
just been in the garage fetling and noticed the left front brake rubbing
on closer inspection the caliper looks like it is touching the disc
any ideas as how that could happen
I have turned the wheel around , still the same
loosened the clamp bolts on left hand side bounced it up and down to centre it
still the same
no shims to take out and adjust
:confused:confused


any help please
 
Has it had a new front wheel at some point cos there are two types but they look the same

1. one wheel for standard calipers 110mm across the centre hub. bearing to bearing

2. one wheel for Radial calipers 115mm across the centre hub

If you have standard calipers you may have the radial type front wheel, this is what i found when i replaced my front wheel, had to sell it and get the correct one

Just checked mine and they caliper has about 2mm - 3mm clearance either side of the disc.

Pretty much like yours!

As long as it doesn't touch the disc under any conditions then it should be fine.

PS. My calliper clearance is equal on all sides.
 
well my caliper has about 1mm on the outside and 3-4mm on the inside
but the one in the photo was touching but I have now just pulled the fork leg out so it has 1 mm clearance which I dont like doing but it runs free now

I wonder if it is a radial wheel how can you tell without taking it out and measuring

I am sure it never used to do this I would have noticed:dunno
 
Doesn't sound right to me mate, the calliper is directly mounted to the lower part of the fork and should not under any circumstances pivot or move.

Does the wheel have the spacers in the correct places?

Does the wheel float around on the spindle?

I'd get it checked out by your local friendly mechanic.
 
measure between the inside of the brake discs close to the centre of the wheel as possible, it should be 110mm for non radial.....the wrong wheel i put on had the exact same look as your pics
 
Right mine did this, after i had changed the front tyre, i had to loosen all the nuts and bolts as if i was removing wheel again , then bounce the front end to get it all to seat,, it works a treat ,,, :thumbup



PS, hope this makes sence i am hungover as a motherfcuker :puke
 
Quick tip for you all...................
After you have had the front wheel out follow this procedure for tightening things up to avoid stiction.


The correct method is tighten up the pinch bolts opposite to the axle nut,then do the axle nut to the correct torque.Then release the pinch bolts and bounce the forks up and down a couple of times to center them and then do everything up.If it's not done like this it causes more stiction and loads the fork bushes.

So another handy tip if you didn't know

bit pi**ed off all I seem to be doing with this bike is sorting out other peoples f**kups
looked like a real minter when I bought it not so sure now


anybody have a earlier front oz wheel they want to swap for a radial type

Mate I know that feeling all too well.

The previous owner to me had done fook all to the bike for 12 months and the owner before him knew fook all.

Between them they had turned a lovely bike in to a pile of ***** and it's taken me 12 months to rectify all the fook ups they created between them.

But alas good things come to those who persist and I now have a tip top bike.

My advice is persist, it'll be well worth it in the end.
