hi,

I am just about to go out and purchase a Tuono 1000R on a 08/09 plate. Could anyone give me any clues what to look out for as in problems or anything like this. I have other bikes and have been riding for 18 years but it's always a help if someone's knows more.

Thanks
Jim

Check for:

frame for crash damage around foot controls.
swingarm damage (behind exhaust cans)
evidence of fogging clocks

Rear brake usually poor, unless rearsets fitted, but can be fixed easily.

:thumbupNikko, welcome to the forum.

For starters, check out Keith B's summary on the TuonoWorld site here: Tuono known problems/hints/tips.(V Twins 2002-2010)
... but keep that in context. It's a pretty thorough sweep of issues, and once 'sorted' (if necessary) through the relatively easy fixes available, the Tuono is a stunning machine with great 'grin factor' for anyone who likes upright riding position and V-twin torque that pulls like a steam train...

Welcome, as mentioned above Keith B is a guru in all details relating to Aprilia.
The thing to bare in mind is that Apes aren't Honda's and therefore have their quirks that we call character, nothing is particularly major (in my opinion) and all contribute to garage time bonding with your Ape. As long as it doesn't leave you stranded somewhere far from home then all is good in Ape world

Cheers for the advice, I will have a read of Keith B's . I have had Ducatis in the past and been left stranded many a time. The hunt begins!

Just to add what the others have said, check the usual stuff, crash damage, service history, etc.Ask if the suspension linkages have been greased lately. Also check everything on the bike works as it should,...especially the 'mode' switch on the l/h handlebar.
Any extra's fitted to the bike?Aftermarket rear shocks and sidestands are good and can save you a packet.
If you can, take a small torch and check the engine number,...its behind the gearbox. If the number is lower than 8176929 then the bike could be fitted with a high wattage alternator. These can burn out the stator. You might be lucky though,Aprilia fixed the problem mid 2008ish.

Hey N.... plenty of good advice here....

Shout out if you want a second pair of eye's over one... I'm sure there will be someone nearby when you find one to view.
I'm in Harrogate n happy to help :yes

Buy mine, 58 plate, Blue and White, Arrow cans, mint

Cheers! That's good of you. I have found 1 and purchased already . I picked up a 62 plate with 3k on it and 1 lady owner on log book. . Sounds like a joke but I could not believe my luck. I got it from a dealer in Gloucestershire with warranty and at a real steal.

Nikko, congrats on the new acquisition! Feel free to post a picture or two when you get a mo! ;)

I do like the Gen 2 looks in Blue & White Thunders selling, and tempted... but too soon to trade up from my recently aquired 03.
