I guess they hadn't been changed ever! yanking on the cap resulted in 3 out of 4 spilling there innards on top of the spark plug. doh! Is this a common problem? Will a standard set of aftermarket NGK fit ok?

Pop down to your local Halfords and see if they can match them up for you, that is unless you can wait for a set to arrive from Aprilia.
