Brakes locked up today

I went out for the first pootle about of the year today, on my RSV1000r Factory.

I fitted the fancy looking ASV/ Pazzo copy levers in the winter and they seemed great, after some minor tweaks.

I had ridden about 10 miles today when all of a sudden (at about 50 MPH and not whilst braking) my front brakes locked up . (I can confirm they bring the bike to a stop very quickly). By some miracle I stayed on but had to drag the bike out of the road, as the brakes just locked up.
I managed to release the pressure at the lever by releasing some fluid and riding home using only the rear brake.

I took the calipers off and the brake pads are tiny and quite soft and crumbly but couldn't see a reason as to why this lockup had happened. If a piston was stuck on it would surely have happened whilst braking and I wouldn't have expected the lever to be as solid as it was.

Which brings me back to the cheap levers. I just did a search on here before posting (some people do it, you know)
Some poor chap had an almost identical experience to me and it seems others have had a similar (or worse) experience.
I think i'll just put the originals back on, even though they look a bit crap.

Can anyone shed any more light on this please, I also require some new underwear

Cheers, Adz :biggrin

It'll be the levers fella, some of the cheapo's aren't machined exactly to tolerance.

Bin them

First thing to check is that you have the correct barrel in the front brake lever pivot!!!!! I fitted ASV levers to my old tuono and removed them when selling but forgot to swap the barrell over and got exactly the same thing........they bind ever so slightly and wne they heat up, they expand, causing the pads to bite the discs!!! Swapped over the barrels and all fine.

Would def start there bud.

also if the new levers are pushing the piston in a small amount when at rest this will open the mc valve so as the fluid warms up it expands and applies the brake

so it may need a small amount of metal removing so the piston is fully out when the lever is full out.

did you over fill the fluid res ? as that can also cause fluid lock and thats the same sort of thing .

Cheers for the replies so far guys.

PaulW- I have to agree mate and probably will bin them.
andirsv- This one doesn't have a barrel, it has a hole smaller than the original lever instead.
lonner- What your saying makes perfect sense (the fluid level is fine too) but i'm still really dubious and worried about it happening again. If I don't take enough off there's always the chance of it happening again and next time the road might be wet or dusty and i'll be on the deck.

For the sake of what COULD happen i'll go back to original or for some quality machined items.
Does anyone have any recommendations , for good levers please?

Thanks again or the advice so far

ASV or Pazzo :confused

Sorry but I just don't get the fact that people buy cheapo Chinese levers that may or may not work for something so crucial as brakes. It's not as if these sort of failures aren't documented, and as long as people buy them the manufacturers will keep kicking out potentially lethal gear. Yes the proper kit is relatively expensive, but it works. The reason cheap stuff is cheap is because it's cheaply made with little or no regard for any imperfection consequences. Try suing the Chinese manufacturer if you have an accident.....

Not having a go at you Adz, just a bit of a bug bear for me.

Sorry for the rant. I'm off to stencil "Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa" onto those nice and cheap Chengy Fukky Wankpot remoulds I bought earlier.

I had the same thing happen but it was my fault. I hadnt fitted the pin that operates the cylinder correctly and it was applying a little pressure making the front lock.

I stripped it down and located it correctly and not had any problems since.

Plenty of good comments on the levers before I bought them with no adverse effects.

If you had seen adz taste in cheap pink shirts the chinese levers would be self explanitory. :nana

Is there another Adz on here? :dunno
I think you've mixed me up with someone else.
