Blue scrubs

Just bought a second hand set of tyres for track use and they have a blue tinge all the way round. Heard this is caused by heat cycling and overheating and that the rubber will have hardened and lost some grip. But also heard this will scrub out
Am I safe to use them on track or should I bin them?
Don't think I'm experienced enough to cope with dodgy tyres. !!!!

Dont worry. I use 2nd hand touring tyres and piss the slick shod experts off every time. ******s know all the tech but cant ride worth a ****.

I use scrubs all the time as my road tyres - Metzeler Racetechs. They are awesome in the dry. Don't worry about the 'blueing'.

Bit of a sweeping statement there fella.......

I can't understand why anyone would trust unknown provenance used tyres on track. Road fine, but for the sake of saving £150 or so on the most crucial part of the bike you're putting your neck on the line.

Just my 2p worth

Have to agree with Paul to a large extent.

Blueing is overheating, not a normal heat cycle. Depends how bad it is but if you plan on using the scrubs for another track days etc where they are discarded realtively quickly they will probably be fine. That overheating will seriously reduce the number of heat cycles left in the tyre though. If you plan on using them for an extended time or on the road i would keep a very close eye on the rubber.

It will go hard and wooden when it's finished. Anyone who's ridden on a tyre that has over heat cycled will know what i mean as it's almost unrideable on the front and no grip. Like riding with solid rubber tyres and scary as hell.
That oil that has come to the surface to blue the tyres is the main thing keeping the rubber supple and there is only a finite amount in any tyre.

+1 on that. They're discarded tyres for a reason....

Hmmmm...... Bit of mixed opinions on this.
Think I'll play safe and get a new set for track. Shame really, loads of tread left in them and the last D211 set I had were great.
As I said, with so little experience I might need that extra grip that these could have lost.

Hey fella. Think spoonz summedr it up pretty sell for ya.
And i can varify that you dont wanna ride on over cycled tires. Mine is currently on a set of scrubs i Put on last self, rode all winter. -4 the lot n! t hat temp you can tap em like their Plastic :/ you can imagine how many beat cycles they've been thought! Now the weathers heated up you can still get a cheeky road kneedown if your gentle, but they move around alot at that Lean.
I digress!
Mine is an Extreme example and as you can see hasnt resulted in an off. Like spoonz says if your just gonna be doing a couple of trackdays then binning them they'll be fine mate. Esply if your in novice or inters, they'l still feel great once heated up :) Dw.

Exceliom

Wow your clearly a riding god lol.
2nd hand touring tires laping quicker than slicks? Maybe in the rain ; )

F*in Android phones. That should say spoonz summed it up WELL, and Put mine on in SEPT!

On and i too have had bluing on road tires on the road, but mainly if the bike was ridden hard then stood a few days.
All the best

Hey mmw14. You dont say what kind of tires you got. Are they soft, medium or hard compound? That will factor in. The answer of whether to use blued tires for a trackday depends on how hard you plan to push it. I use Michelin 2CTs and they too have some bluing. But after a couple of hot laps, the bluing will be gone. Recommend you give at least a half lap or so to let the tires come up to temp before pushing it hard. Or use tire warmers in the pit and you can go faster sooner. If youre not pressed to go fast from the get-go, give them a chance to warm up properly and you will be fine.

This is all really good advice and very interesting reading. So many opinions and all making a good point!
The tyres are still nice and soft and were only manufactured last autumn. I've fitted them and will have a go at Castle Combe tomorrow.

Cool, make sure to get some pictures ; )

Also jus a little observation, mine are still very "soft" but not the right sort. You compare them to a fresh set and they are a mooshy soft, stick your nail in em and it leaves no print, weird..
