Bloody Speedo

B

Beanie

Cleaned all the bolts off from rust and muck, and have followed the advice and taken the unit to bits and resoldered the connections, but still my speedo reads zero, so was just about to order a new speedo pickup, when my nipper, asked if i had caught its cabling when i was fitting the inforad:dunno

So my questions are:

1) which connector block by the speedo clock would i need to check to make sure all the wires are making good contact?

2) When the reg/rectifiier started smoking cos of the brown connector, i could have sworn i saw smoke coming up from behind the dash, but couldnt see or smell anything, so could this have taken out the speedo sensor cabling?

Pissed off as i have only just finished putting it all back together, and not really in the mood to rip it all to bits again.

Areessmill - See my photos to see what she looks like now, as you wanted a update. Though she will change more before the TT,

Connector block for the speedo is behind the R/H side panel ( the one under the seat).

I found a problem with mine ( a new speedo sensor) not long after i'd replaced it. The sensor cable had come out of the cable tray on the R/h side of the swingarm and was rubbing through on the tyre and giving allsorts of readings. I insulated it and tie wrapped the cable to the brake pipe and tucked it back in and it's been fine ever since. So just have a look yours isn't doing the same. :thumbup

Mine was still in the cable tray and someone had even put a zip tie with it to the brake pipe to make sure it didnt rub.

Found the 3 pin connector you mentioned behind my side panel and it has no corrosion or owt and is connected.

Next step will be to take the top fairing off and see if i can identify the loom and look behind the dash and see if its been trapped or become disconnected or summat.

Hi Beanie, looking at the schematics the speedo connects into the left hand LCD display on the instrument cluster.
Question...was the speedo working before you fitted the inforad :dunno

Speedo could be kaput, test it using this proceedure SPEEDO TESTING

Keep us posted :thumbup

Cheers sprocker,

I fitted a alarm, and the inforad and a new lockset, then when i fired the bike up, the reg/rectifier decided to stat smoking, which turned out to be the brown plug, so i did the mods to them, although i was sure i saw smoke coming from behind the dash, but couldn't be certain at the time.

anyway, i followed the test in the link you sent, and the vlotages i got were:

0.26v with the sensor connected
11.78v with the sensor disconnected from the 3 pin connector under the seat

0.02v from the grey/white and blue/orange with sensor connected
8.81v from the grey/white and blue/orange with sensor disconnected

and spinning the rear wheel resulted in it still reading 0.02v .

Having never really grown out of my inquisitive stage of life, i attacked it with a hacksaw and have cut the sensor open to find the tiny pcb corroded and a little 8 legged chip like thing loose in there, plus the metal barrel shaped thing had a crack running through it and was very rusty, so was dead.

Next job will be to get a new sensor ordered and will update here what i get next.

Cheers

Used hacksaw as i didn't know what was inside and was afraid if i used one of my hammers on it, something gooey might have been squelched out over my zxr or rsv lol

must be getting old as never used to think about **** like that before :)

Just fitted the new sensor and now my voltage with the sensor connected is 8.21v.

Spin the rear wheel slowly and the voltake drops to nearly nothing, then rises again as the bolt passes the sensor.

Spin the wheel quickly and you can see the dash counting in km's,

Took bike out for a 30 mile roadtest, and speedo works great again.

Cheers for your help guys with this one
