just got a 2000 rsv, the bike wont start, on the diagnostic screen its showing instead of zero, the number 1, can anyone advise

Welcome edmeads. The 1 that is showing is the TPS sensor position, which should read 0 when set correctly. For this you will need to wind out the idle adjustment completely and then adjust the TPS to 0. If all of that seems like a foreign language then let me know and i'll clarify anything that isn't clear.
What are the non start symptoms? Probably easier to start there and work forwards.

I doubt your starting problems are due to the TPS. I had the same showing on the dash when my fuse box melted - I reckon it's a general red herring message that can show up with a range of electrical problems.
First thing of course, make sure the dignostic leads under the seat aren't connected!
