Tried to fire the Mille for the first time in about 5 months to day with no joy [:(]

First i let the fuel pump primp to get some fuel in the system then hit the start button. Tried to turn over but was having none of it, then i hear that awful sound from the start motor. Tried again still tried to go but nothing. Then tried agian and all i got was a clicking sound, tried again and still the same, just a clicking sound. Then i noticed a lttle bit of smoke coming from what i think is the starter relay/solenoid, (its round and sit in front of the ECU in the middle). Tried again and still clicking and smoke from the start relay, also noticed the terminals on the battery where hot.

Im guessing it is the relay but would like to hear other opinions.

Cheers,

Ritch

Sounds like the starter solenoid is goosed. You can try and short out the two solenoid terminals and see if the bike turns over. If not check the battery is fully charged and is not faulty. Also check the battery terminals are not corroded and are lightly greased and tight.

My money is on the battery being bad in the first place Ritch, this will cause problems with the solenoid you describe, if your battery is not good it will cause the solenoid to stick which is what you are hearing and causing the smoke, if you need a solenoid the yamaha ones are better and cheaper

Yamaha starter relay part number 4KD-81940-00-00

Also your fuel may well be bad after 5 months, the fuel evaporates and leaves a sort of varnish, this may well be in the injectors, first of all though you need to have a good battery and a good solenoid.

Any more probs just email me:thumbup

just read article in RIDE mag about the rsv mille it says.quoted from the mag

sprag/starter clutch
The voltage gets low so starter can't persuade the pistons to overcome comprestion,it then kicks back and damages the starter clutch.keep the battery toped up.

its just a guess maybe starter got stuck and over heated the solenoid

Im betting the battery hasnt enough charge , whack it on charge try that if it still doesnt start earth out the solinoid , if it kicks its that if not it could be the sprag gear in the starter , this all has happened to mine . Grab yourself a trickle charger , keeps the charge up always , good investment if you leave it sitting for 5 months . Man id go mad if i couldnt ride for that long . Hope you get it running .:thumbup

Keep it plugged in to an optimate if poss. You dont want a low battery to feltch up your sprag clutch. The sprag with the clutch gear/housing and labour was just under £500 on my 02 model. Thats why its also very important not to use any throttle when you fire the bike up.
To check the sprag clutch you need to take the starter motor off the front of the engine. The gear on the front of the sprag clutch should only rotate in one direction. If it turns both ways then its duff. If yours isn't turning over at all though it probably is not that. If the battery aint tip top then Badgers solenoid theory is the most likely I reckon.

Mine has nearly the same fault, My throttle cables were stuck so I lifted the tank, removed the air box and both cables, plenty of WD40, great all free. Refitted the cables and air box. Throttle worked great, twisted on and returned.
I then tried to start the bike, it turned over a couple of times but did not fire, battery flat. I charged the battery up, now when I try to start it all I can here is the fuel pump run and the starter solonoide click, but the starter does not engage.

I,m pissed off.

I pray the sprag clutch has n,t gone

It is so easy to knacker the solenoid trying to turn over the motor with a dodgy battery, you need a battery that is in good order for these twins, you may have knackered the solenoid, do a search on here for the yamaha one, i put up a post somewhere with the part number you need.

Yes you right Badger, I,ve took the solenoid off, tested it as stated in the workshop manual and found it to be Buggered. Theres a guy on ebay selling used ones for £14.99 + postage. Or theres this 250212622626 on ebay (New) for £7.50 + postage. Aprilia price is about £42. Or Yamaha 4KD-81940-00-00 (have n,t found price yet).

What do you think ??

I did manage to loose one of the rubber sleeves/boots that covers the relay terminals :eek:mg so if anyones got one going spare give us a shout.
