Bike revving like mad !

Hello all, got an 05 Factory which over the last 2 months has been misbehaving, so I sent him to the garage with no food whilst the snow fell.

Got the bike out the other day and charged the battery, now I have to say that, previously, when riding the bike, after about 5 mins there would be a momentary loss of power for a second then the bike would be fine for the remainder of the journey. In fact it became so regular, the pause would happen under a particular bridge every morning.

Anyway, after charging the battery, the bike would cut out intermittently when riding, almost like that limp home thing where it won't let you rev over 3K and cuts the power. I thought it was linked to the battery but the voltage readings were fine.

After some investigating it was advised that I changed the oil pressure sensor, so I did yesterday, needed almost 2 litres of oil too .... embarrassingly.

I put the bike together and went for a blast and it was cutting out still, it was awful. 1 mile from home I pulled up to some traffic lights, throttled off and the bike started to accelerate, I grabbed the brakes and pulled in the clutch and the bike revved up to 3K as if possessed by a devil.

I got it home and took the battery out to check it over. This morning I realised why the bike had been cutting out, the +ve terminal on the battery hadn't been screwed in properly and it intermittently cut out - explained the cutting out issue.

BUT for some reason the bike is not idling correctly. It began idling immediately at 3K revs and by the time I got to work it idled at 4K revs,m led to a hairy ride in to work. I mistakenly put Super Unleaded in the bike yesterday, surely that can't be the reason. Is there a screw/knob or something that will allow me to turn the idle revs down ??

Cheers

No, idle is adjusted by the bike's ECU. No knob as there was on the earlier models.

Balls ! I was hoping there was a fast idle or something similar I could adjust.

So how do you guys adjust the idle when you do track days etc ??

You can't adjust the idle, the only adjustments available are for CO2 set up on the throttle bodies and MAP2 within the ECU for open race cans. Have you correctly checked the oil level? These are dry sump engines and oil level checking is not like an jap inline 4 for example. 2 litres of oil is a lot to top up as they only take around 3 3/4 litres anyhow.

I took the bike for a 15 minute run, got up to 60mph, then checked the oil when I got home. There was nothing in the viewing tube so I bought a 1 litre bottle and topped it up - still couldn't see anything in the tube so bought another 1litre bottle and watched carefully. Upright the oil level was just under the maximum line.

Admittedly I am usually rubbish at checking stuff like oil, I usually forget until it goes for a service.

I spoke to Southern Cross and they think the alarm/immobiliser is incorrectly wired, they think the alarm reset the ECU or something like that. I bow to their superior knowledge but I've changed batteries on the bike and had the battery out in the past to charge it and never had a problem so why all of a sudden would this wiring problem manifest itself - if that is what it is ???

I'm strapped for cash so electrical problems are not needed right now, the bike will have to get locked up until I can spare a couple hundred notes, unless anyone can think of anyting else I could try ......

disconnect the batt and leave it for 10 mins and reconnect.

If still idling fast it's either a vac leak near tb's or an alarm (if fitted) or immobilisor ecu

get the griffer on the case [fusebox on here] he usually calms me down when i panic with **** like this ...bang off the symptoms to him over the fone its like nhs direct but this one works :biggrin

Nice one peeps, I'll see how I get on and try to contact the griffer.

All this fancy dan technology, when it goes wrong its a nightmare.

If there was a fast idle control I could at least temporarily sort the problem out.

Now you need a laptop to fix everything ... I hate computers at the best of times. As soon as I heard the words "wiring" my heart sank cos I know it means a high bill.

What a wonderful comparison :thumbup Sad but undoubtably true

Not technical myself...........but for the fast idle, have you checked the trottle cable. Might not be returning fully.

griff's in spain helping test some bikes, not sure when he's back. i'm not due a visit til march lol

Just out of interest ya didnt just keep filling the bike with oil until it got to the just under max level did ya ?

Little1 uk - nah, I poured a little then stopped, poured a little then stopped and repeated it until I'd emptied the bottles.

Well I'm not sure what happened last night but going on these alarm suggestions I pressed the "wrong" immobiliser button on the fob which sets off the alarm, on purpose, then cancelled the alarm. I started the bike and it revved to around 2100 rpms, then I said many prayers to God asking for the revs to drop as opposed to rise as the bike warmed up. It seems my prayers were answered. :biggrin :doug

The revs droppoed to around 1500/1300 rpms and the bike behaved perfectly during the ride home. The ride in to work this morning I was scaring pedestrians and bullying car drivers, nothing like the obscene growl of MIVV GP cans.

So .. I have no idea what the problem was or how I remedied it, or indeed how it remedied itself, I'll go with what some of you and Southern Cross suggested though, with regard to the immobiliser cos thats the only thing I did differently in the last 2 days.

Cheers
