Bike is stalling with clutch fully in (idle)

Hi Guys

just picked up an 07 RSVR (Bol'dor colours) and love it, however, on the way home from the shop today where I purchased it, it stalled a couple of times with the clutch fully in. Its like it runs out of effort :dunno

It will idle in nuetral but I suspect this is *only just* and seems on the edge of dieing.

I adjusted the clutch lever all the way out and I think this may of helped a little but, do you think it would be wise to up the idle a little? If so, I know roughly how to do this but don't know where the idle setting is, any clues please?

Oh, i've been told its been set to map 2 and has Leonardo SBK pipes on it... if this makes a diference?

Many thanks!

fook.... just read you can't adjust the Idle speed without reprogramming the ecu.... any ideas what could be wrong then?

A pretty common fault on new model RSVR and Factory that have had open cans and map 2 enabled. The throttle bodies need resynching and the CO reset. Any good Aprilia dealer will do this using Axone. As you are London based try Southern Cross motorcycles in Kilburn. They have a reputation second to none

cheers legs, i'm assuming i can't get this done under warranty? :-(

How much should i expect to pay?

It won't be warranty as its resetting base idle and co settings. £30 or £40 should cover it i guess

Cheers mate.... gota say, you guys have been diamond! Thanks loads :doug

So did you get this bike used with the pipes on it or did you pay the dealer to install the cans?

If you bought the bike new and paid to have the cans installed...they do have to change you over to "map 2"...also...they have to sync the TB's etc...this should be part of putting on the cans and changing maps. If you don't do this...the bike will run like ****.

What you should really do is head over to Southern Cross and have them put the bike on the Dyno and add a PCIII and get that baby custom mapped for optimum performance...it's about $500USD over here.

:thumbup Cheers for the advice

I purchased the bike used. Now, over here in the UK we have the Sales Of Goods act and I wonder if I could actually get the selling shop to repair it i.e. TB's and CO2... as part of this act for free as the bike can very easily be judged as "Not fit for purpose"... what good is a bike that constantly stalls and will quickly flatten the battery????!!!

However, this shop is about 100miles away from where I live and there are two other Apilia dealers (Southern Cross and another, even closer in Slough) that can do this. If its only £30 or £40quid, i'd rather just get it done localy at my own cost.

Tbh, not sure I really need a PC. I really aint that good a rider to notice or even need the extra power it will give me.

First step to be honest, Datatools S4 RED! :)

So confused....

Just spoke to the dealer in Slough and he is adamant that it doesn't need the TB's or CO changed even with straight through pipes. :dunno He was sure as a sure thing that the only time you need map 2 is if you fit a PC :confused

**** .... life was so much easier with my old Honda SP1!!! :biggrin

So guys, is this guy in Slough right or wrong? If he is right, i need to throw it back at Bike Wise, if he's wrong, I will probably still throw it back at Bike Wise but for the other reason.

("throw it back" - don't mean return it, I mean get it fixed)

I can't actually tell if its running like sh&t or not yet as its got brand new tyres on it and its also pis*ing it down :roll

So confused :angry

my bike was doing thisbut i knew it was way overfilled with oil and the clutch was slipping.
she went in yesterday to my mate who races rsv's in the darley dales,he's fantastic with bikes, milles in perticular,i also get race scrub tyres for next to newt off him lol.
he said it had arf a litre of oil to much in it and it was the wrong oil, like piss water he said,he's also changed the clutch fluid, done the front sprocket and changed all 4 spark plugs, the awkward one on the front cylinder he said was fukd and never been changed, probably cos its so hard to get at,it was corroded and a pig to get out,but at least theyre all done now, and given the bike a very good bill of health, all for £85.im a happy bunny and now know everythings a1 with the bike, which your never quite sure of with ewt 2nd hand!

Guess the question still stands, anyone any idea's if the TB's and CO2 do actually NEED to be done or should the bike still function ok without them?

Yes the co2 needs to be checked. setting the co2 balances the Tb in the same process on post 04 machines.

for it to be still spot on after going from a closed (corrected) system to an open (manual) system and a can change would be lucky to say the least.

So, sounds like the "approved Aprilia dealer" in Slough is wrong then. Thanks mate :)

Have phoned bike wise who are going to check on there records and see if this was all done or not.

Just to say though, don't know if it is spot on as its been raining really badly here and they are brand new tyres so haven't dared open the throttle yet.

Hi Stuza :) first and foremost, seeing as the bike is an 07 I am rather guessing that it was sold to you with a warranty, be it the existing Aprilia warranty, or one provided by Bike Wise themselves (store in Oxfordshire yes?) in its current condition i.e. the can set up and map 2 being enabled. I guess also that the comment stating map 2 is enabled was given to you by a sales person? Did they claim to have supplied the bike to its previous owner(s)?

I'd check the details of any supplied warranty, then pick up the phone and explain to them what is happening re the clutch/stalling and that this is clearly not what you'd expect from spending however much on the bike. Ask them what they are able/going to do about it. Don't provide them with anymore information than you need to. They advertise as being an Aprilia dealer, it is their responsibility to have the product knowledge, not yours. If they state something that you know clearly not to be correct, then advise them. All in a polite fashion of course, no point in rubbing them the wrong way before you even start.

I know DK get a bit of a bad rep here and there but when I had problems with my Bimota they sold me, they collected it and returned it to me (400 odd mile round trip) after the problems had been rectified all free of any charges.

Personally before you start shelling out money trying to resolve the problem yourself, get yourself on the phone and see what they are prepared to do. Irrespective of whether the bike has open cans/map 1/map 2, black, orange or blue tyres, you have paid for something which should be operationally competent, and this does not include stalling everywhere!

You haven't bought a bike privately, so none of this "you had your chance to inspect it/sold as seen" rubbish. You've paid for a product and a service and you haven't been provided with it.

Good luck and hope to hear some better news soon :)

so you are armed with the facts the map1/2 does not determine the open/closed loop. The axone can set an engine variant. Variant 2 being open loop.

then when you have open loop you load a map suited to variant 2 which will be Map 2 (which also comes in several flavours)

So the order they need to confirm is

1. You have the ecu in variant 2 mode
2. You have Map 2 loaded and the latest one which will require their axone to have the latest firmware to get.
3. They re check the co2 and set it correctly and confirm the vacumm gives a reading on the axone of around 60 (which confirms no Vac leaks which can induce stalling)
