Wow.....most i ever got out of a batttery is just over 2 years, that was on my zx9r

Any of you use Optimates or similar? They seem very good at keeping the battery at its best and with a small trickle charge every so often the battery will keep a bit of 'natural' warmth.

Been using one for ages, the battery is still on its way out though

Had the same battery for 4 years and use an optimate during the winter

Good to know mate, paid £90 for a gell battery just over a year ago and its fooked.....this pc310 cost £66 inc postage

Can only give it a go and see........:thumbup

Mine appeared knackered the other week....but was resurrected and still going strong with regular use of optimate...original battery I believe so is 4 years old!!

Last battery I got, I paid about £28 delivered from FleaBay and its still going strong. Think it was a YTX14

*newbie alert*

So i picked up my '06 bike on Saturday, got it home safely in the torrent. Put it in the garage, pfaffed with the alarm (Datatool System 4). Did the same Sunday and started the bike up as well (just because). Yesterday was nice and I had an opportunity for a quick blast to scrub in the new rear which the dealers fitted. Ker chug. No juice in the battery, the meter said like 10.7 or something. I guess being in the showroom and then started a couple of times ran it right down.

Put it on an Datatool charger last night and it started okay this morning. So to the questions (they are coming).

How many starts can you get out of a battery before it runs flat? Just a finger in the air. All the mag articles I read highlight the battery as a weak spot but I'd just value opinions from the experts.

Seeing people talking about only getting a year or 2 out of batteries has me "ulping". Hopefully the trickle will help.

The bike doesn't like being stopped/started/stopped/started, I find the less messing about done once the key is turned...i.e. start her up straight away, the less problems you'll have. I have mine on trickle charge all year round, to try & keep the battery in good condition....The problem is that twin lump is a big old bugger to start and with the lights going on with the ignition, if the battery hasn't got a full or nearly full charge it struggles!!!

Cheers newboots, I kind of suspected that and normally it won't be an issue as it will be a case of start ride to work (30 miles) stop park up, start ride home so the battery should get plenty of charging.

perhaps best avoiding those stop start shopping trips then :)

so how long in years do you reckon for a battery then?

Yello , I had battery problems with my SV1000 before i got my Tuono , A mechanic friend told me that even if you start the bike up and leave it running then the motor alone is not creating enough AMPS to put any charge into the battery so he strongly advised against doing this. What he did say was that once you start the bike you need to cover about 10miles at an average 30mph to but back into the battery the juice that had been drained out to start the bike. Once i followed his instructions the next battery lasted for as long as i kept the bike which was another 3 and a half years. Hope this helps :)

As with all RSV, RSVR and Tuono, especially if they have a alarm fitted, keep them hooked up to an optimate and you shouldn't have any battery or starting problems :thumbup

cheers guys. i guess i need a bit of readjustment. mind you i had all the same issues with my GSX-R750 although that could be bumped, I'm guessing bumping a twin is a whole different ballgame :)

My zx7r is still on its original battery (1998!)
Its starting to loose the plot now the bike isn't used everyday, infact both my bikes could do with new ones now.

I've never used an optimate in my life and I think the secret has been the fact the bike has been used regularly.

My dad has had one in his R100RT since the early-mid 1990's I think. Still works great.

The oem Yusa that came in my 1997 TLS only died last year and even then it wasn't a total death - it just didn't have enough to start consistently in very cold (well below freezing) weather. It was fine in normal temps, but a new bat had it back to starting in all temps:devious
