Hi
I've been having trouble starting my bike over the last few days as when i try to turn it over it seems to be lacking power and the makes a clicking sound resulting in the display resetting. This morning it wouldnt start at all and the battery is reading approx 11.4v.

I get the impression the battery is not holding its charge as the voltage rises to about 13.6 when the engines ticking over! Are there any simple checks I should make or should i just invest in a new battery?? Please bear in mind i'm not the most technically minded of bikers so any checks would need to be simplish!!

If i need a new battery is there a certain type that i should go for, ( i saw a Gel Type on ebay??)) that would give me a bit more oomph??

Thanks for any help

Ben

Dude... I get the same also, even with a Optimate. Re-phrase that... If I do not use my Optimate for a few days it will flatten enough to reset my dash...

Some boyz on here no the 'correct' battery part no. Cranking Ummph and all that...

I just had the same problem with mine just a couple of weeks ago and had to buy myself a new battery.

I had thought it was the starter solenoid as the battery was still putting out 13.5 volts but after putting on a known good battery i discovered that it was the fault.

Hi Mate comes up on a regular basis stick battery in seach and get lots of veiws on what make but most agree to upgrade to higher amps .
heres a copy of post i found really useful on testing , forgive me can't remember who posted it first but cheers again .

FAQ's

How do I test my 12 Volt battery and charging system?

Following are three tests you can perform on your battery and charging system.

Static Battery Voltage Test

Prior to conducting this test, make sure the battery has not been recently charged. You must wait at least one hour after charging your battery to conduct this test.

Adjust voltmeter to DC volts (20 volt range).

Place voltmeter leads to the battery terminals. (positive to positive and negative to negative)

Read voltage and refer to the chart below.

State of Charge

12.80v ........................ 100% Charged

12.60v ........................ 100% Charged

12.40v ........................ 75% Charged

12.10v ........................ 50% Charged

11.90v ........................ 25% Charged

less than 11.80v .......... 0% Charged

Starting Load Test

Adjust voltmeter to DC volts (20 volt range).

Place voltmeter leads to the battery terminals. (positive to positive and negative to negative)

Watch the voltmeter as you start your motorcycle.

If the voltage drops below 9.5 volts, the battery has very low capacity and should be replaced.

Charging System Test

Adjust voltmeter to DC volts (20 volt range).

Place voltmeter leads to the battery terminals. (positive to positive and negative to negative)

Start your motorcycle.

Bring engine RPM's up to approximately 3,000

Compare the voltage reading to the specification in your owner's manual.
(Note: the voltage reading should be approx. 14.0 - 14.5 volts to properly charge an AGM battery.)

don’t know if this will help but I had similar problems on my 02 rsvr turned out to be starter solenoid got a pattern part from hastings motor cycles and it worked a treat. But did break down in Belgium and that was battery needing replacement but my original battery had lasted 28000 miles of hard use maybe that’s about their limit.

Bengo, as mentioned this comes up quite often on here. Do a search and all the info is there. 3 things to do to solve RSV and RSVR starting problems

1. Buy an Optimate III SP and keep you bike hooked up at all times when not being used.

2. If your battery has given up the ghost, you can upgrade to a YTX-14BS battery if your bike isn't already fitted with one. Buy either a Varta, Yuasa or Bosch battery.

3. Fit an uprated Yamaha starter solenoid part number 4KD-81940-00. They are about £30 from any yamaha dealer.

Thanks for the help guys!!
The Optima charger isnt really an option as i have to store the bike quite a distance from an electrical point, but I ride it every day anyway! I think i'll go for the battery upgrade mentioned and hopefully that will sort things!!

What benefit is there to fitting the Yamaha relay :dunno I have no problems with mine so would it still be better to do this upgrade :dunno

Hi guys, same issue with mine! I have a question though, I have changed my cans for Akie's and had the fuel map changed to map 2 (i think) on the ecu..

My query is, will I have to get the fuelling remapped again (will it go back to factory settings) when I get a new battery?

Sorry to jump in on your thread Bengo!

But bengo, before you spend any money check the battery terminals are tight. (they can vibrate loose) Thats all is was on my bike. The clocks would light up then reset and I got the clicking. Found one of the terminals loose. Tightened up and was back in business at zero cost:thumbup
