Back to Basics

We are all what we'd like to call expert and experienced riders but we can all forget to apply the basic rules of riding at some point.

Sometimes these judgement errors are caused by bravado, tiredness or sometimes lack of knowledge of the road ahead.

Given that I hate hearing or reading about bad news I thought I would post up the Ridesafe PDF for all to read and digest.

Please do not take offence against this post, it's not that I'm saying you all need training etc.... more that I would hate to hear of or lose any more of you lot.

On this note of training, I understand we have some resident instructors on the forum, please step forward.... I think that it would be a great idea to do some sort of tuition at our proposed meet up next year (2010).

Any of you guys up for this?

Funny you should put this up, i had organised a sort of bikesafe track day held at castle coombe where they train you to use your brakes and set up your suspension for beter road manners / riding.

Me and Leesrsv were supposed to be doing it at the beginning of september, but due to my accident, i had completely forgot about it.

Original plan was to complete it, and then see if we could have a zone day doing the same thing.

Don't worry though, Once i get a new bike next year, i will still sort this out for everyone.

Agreed, only Muppets ignore free advice. :thumbup

I thought long and hard about this as I read the thread on Mark (RIP mate), I suppose over the years I have learnt a lot and also picked up many bad habits that need addressing ASAP. :roll

I looked at the advanced riding courses etc... on the net but remembered that we had resident instructors on the forum. I don't mind paying for their time as I see rider training to be a very important aspect of staying alive.

Suppose we just have to wait and see who else volunteers to help us out with our riding skills. (Beanie you're a star mate :thumbup)

Bought myself a Dogcam kit so I can film my riding and analyse myself to death.

always good to keep learning, brings it home with posts like Mark recently. defo up for some tips if it can be organised.

Being one of the resident instructors on here, I'd be honoured to help out :thumbup

RockDr, I'd be up for getting a group together to soak up some of your wisdom - let us know how you'd like to play it.
I hear that Hampshire Police have cancelled their Bikesafe course this year for economic reasons - Wiltshire are still running one though. I can thoroughly recommend these courses - not so much that they teach you stuff you don't know but they make you think about it and use it.

OK guys, I'll step forward. I'm a senior motorcycle observer (that's a qualification not an age thing) with the IAM and have been for years. I'd be happy to offer my services free of charge, (unless you want me to travel a long way, then I would suggest a tank of petrol). I'm sure I could persuade some of my qualified colleagues to join in too.
My approach is that I would want you to ride at the speed you normally ride at and I'll assess and give constructive feedback. The only time I absolutely insist on sticking to speed limits is in town - i.e. posted limits and where there are pedestrians.

I'm based in Bedford but am prepared to travel.

I'm also prepared to do this any time and any location (within reason), not just wait for next year's meet.

What do you say guys?

I'd be up for that BOB. Anyone else?
How about we aim to do it Oxfordshire way which is pretty central for quite a few members?

Er, I'll need a bit more notice than that - and an off-camp pass from the wife!

I would be up for this too. 100,000 miles in 4 years could count for experience, but it could also mean different...

Thank god for that - I was joking. :biggrin

As I'm self employed I can make any time, even mid week and I don't mind if it's just one rider or a bunch. So, if you find yourself free just pm me and we'll get together somewhere.

Cool Bob. Shall I put up a new thread to gauge interest? If there's a few from over this way (West) then if you don't mind coming over here I'd be happy to contribute to your fuel, etc. Then maybe you can do the same over East if there is enough interest. Sound good? Don't want to commit you to anything you don't want to do!

That sounds good to me. I'll happily ride West, East, North and Sarf. If I do that maybe we need to liase to work out a good route. One with lots of twisties in with a little bit of busy main road.

I'll pm you my email address and mobile number in case I'm out of reach of my pc.

Sorry but Im late into this post. Some of you may remember I offered observation rides a year or so ago. Took a few folk out, they all seemed to enjoy it. Garin took up a whole course and Passesd his RoSPA test in September, so a big up to him. My idea was that if anyone wanted a few days out in the westcounty coupled with a bit of advanced riding then Im you man.

Excellent Sabre, I was hoping you'd come on board. I remember the take-up you got and the excellent feedback. Maybe we can all get together depending on A303's response(s)?

Rockdoctor is 'in' too. If we get one really good session then hopefully we can move on from there.

I'll pm you with my details
