I just bought an 03 Tuono 1000R from a certified dealership. So far I am in love with the bike. It has 36,000 miles on it but I have read that these engines are tanks and will run forever if well maintained. What are your experiences with average motor life tuono engines?

Regular oil changes and a check on the valve clearances every 12K will keep it sweet.
Check oil level when hot. Just after a run, It will seep back into the engine as it cools, too much oil and it will blow into the air box.

FFS Garry get it right mucker. :thumbup

I did, it runs out of the tank and back into the engine leaving the sight tube low / empty.

When a dry sump engine "wet sumps" it used to be recommended that the oil is drawn off and returned to the tank (to avoid damage to the crank etc when starting what is effectively an over filled sump) I've never bothered however, I just try to start it "quietly" and keep the revs down 'til the oil tank is re-filled. What do you guys do?

Good point, especially on old brit bikes.

Not sure if its an issue with the T though.

When my oil needs to be replaced, it seems to drain from the tank quickly, I assume into the sump.

To check the level, you have to start the engine & let it run for a while before switching it off to allow the level to correct its self or you can think its empty & over-fill it.

Valve clearances on the early Gen 1 bikes are checked every 15000 km or approx. 9375 miles, also get the throttle bodies balanced & all will be good

best way to check the oil in the gen 1 is start it up go for a blast to warm all the oil up put the bike on the sidestand ...push the fast idle lever up to show 2300rpm on the clock .
lift the bike off the sidestand untill its ballanced out ..while its ballanced out then check the oil level...it should be just under the top line...job done
