Austin Racing exhausts

Hi all, perhaps anyone can give me some info on this. I'm thinking of fitting an Austin Racing GP2R end can onto my bike. When enquiring with my dealer, they have said,
"don't deal with Austin Racing as fitting one of their exhausts voids the Aprilia warranty, it's the only exhaust that causes engine problems with the V4 engine... it's to do with it not having enough back pressure and burning exhaust valves."

Any thoughts anyone?

It's well known that fitting aftermarket exhausts can necessitate an engine remap to retune the engine... (which would invalidate warranty) but I'd be interested to know how reducing exhaust gas back-pressure could burn out exhaust valves!!

From what I have read, the free flowing exhaust causes the engine to run leaner/hotter thus damaging the valves with the excess heat, and the fact that the valves are made from toffee doesn't help the matter. Lots of people run end cans without a remap, lots say you must have one, read up as much as you can, then make your decision.
ApriliaForum. Com has lots of threads on the subject.
Imo, fit the can then get your bike on a dyno to check the afr. If it's very lean get a remap (either race ecu or Gabro remap, both may void your warrantee, though the race ecu is an Aprilia supplied item, many more stories on that too) or if possible fit a pc5 to alter the fueling.

Bit concerning this, I have a V4R 2014 model which will be out of warranty in May & i have an Austin Racing GP2R end can.....I had the larger baffle to shut it up a bit as it was very loud, it runs perfectly so didn't see the need for any remapping etc.

Your dealer is talking *****.

He will be trying to sell you the official Aprilia Akrapovic slip on with the code to unlock the ecu (enable race mapping).

As with any straight through exhaust you should have your fueling adjusted to match the free flow exhaust and yes it may run slightly lean without a remap.

I have an AR on mine and I can't see how it would affect back pressure any more than any other straight through pipe.

As for for engine remapping voiding the warranty............again not factual as Aprilia sell an official race mapped ecu as an aftermarket option and as long as it is installed by an Aprilia dealer it does not void the warranty.

This too is a joke as an ecu swap is literally a plug and play job, then run a program on Guzzidiag (or pads if you're a dealer) to redo throttle and handle learning.

i too am with rizla on this ..have always from new changed from standard to race can with no problems ..dealer after more money out of u hence the nick name stealers..9000 miles and not a problem
cheers

Aprilia have their arses covered, only Akro pipes and the ecu upgrade will be covered by warranty, yeah I know it's ***** but that's how they work. I've cut 100mm off my Akro slip on but it's still covered because I have the Akro and ecu upgrade.

I'd just run the AR anyway with the race map and if you had any warranty issues(unlikely) slap the stock pipe back on for the claim, all my stock gear is sitting on the shelf .

I've run my 1100 Factory on a dyno and yes the Stock map is very lean, emmisions and all that crap. personally I won't run a decat and slip on without the tune, there is no doubt it's going to be very very lean this way. Tune the bike, It makes it awesome, the standalone Race ECU is wicked.

Of course Aprillia (and most consumer product manufacturers) will typically only warrant product modifications that they themselves have tested and approved! No manufacturer in their right mind would have an open warranty that allowed any modification. Changing the EPROM in an ECU and implementing a different fuel mapping is a major design mod, which could take the vehicle outside of Type Approval limits as well as safe operating specs.

I appreciate there are several well tried and tested after market EPROMS, but why would a manufacturer endorse them without first checking them, and why would they want to do that when their is no commercial benefit.

I think the risk of damage to a Motorbike is low, especially if the advice above is taken re. checking mixture. But just because a manufacturer has its own approved after market mods which do not invalidate the warranty doesn't mean any other brand of the same mid won't. Buyer beware!

Which begs the question:
Has anyone heard of a Tuono which burnt out it's exhaust valves because an after market chip + straight through exhaust was fitted without a remap?

Agreed with all you've said but It's a risk during warranty regardless. Me personally , I'm using a cut down Akro with the new 1100 race ecu, which is covered etc. I've had my bike on a dyno and I've seen the AF and it's lean, very lean. I'm not running my 25k aud bike like that, another $890 aud for an ecu is just apart of the mods as far as I'm concerned.

Hi all, below is a reply from Austin Racing.

Ah yes again they are trying to get you to buy the Akra system as this has a dealer warranty and all other exhausts do not !

It is a sad state of affairs when this happens and of course absolute rubbish, I have a 2015 RSV4-RF with our GP1 system on and it is absolutely fine, no issues, in fact runs and breaths better than the standard, not to mention the sound !! Awesome .. We have two of these owned by myself and the company owner Rich, we both run our slip-on without any problems, mine is the show bike and Rich’s is in the videos on our youtube channel !

Aprilia UK used to recommend our system without issue, but due to their contractual agreement with Akra, they now do not. And the claim that our slip-on exhaust will overheat the engine and burn the vales out is utter rubbish.

We are the official Aprilia Moto America exhaust supplier ! We also supply track day instructors in the UK who race and they have no issues whatsoever.

Each system we make is thoroughly tested on our in house dyno to ensure there are no issues with any of them.

I hope this helps and goes some way to putting your mind at rest on this.

Please feel free to contact us any time

Every bike I have owned has had an aftermarket can with no remap and has been solid....Why is Aprilia different?

It's not. Dyno your bike, look at the A/F ratio, if you're happy to add a free flowing pipe and run it even leaner that's your call.
I wanted to test mine to see how lean it was stock, It's very lean. As I said earlier, the race map adds so much more to the performance of the bike other than bringing up the A/F ratio.
I'm a machine sympathetic person, listening to my engine pop and misfire due to extreme lean running makes me cringe, seems a lot of people like the pretty flames.
