Aprilia design flaw #99 - Oil tank position

Rewinding a couple of months....
I got a nice surprise when wheeling the bike out for the first time this year. The front face of the oil tank took a lot of stonechips and subsequently has suffered the most horrific bubbling rust in a way only the finest Italian metal can do.

I was gonna remove it, sort the rust and layer plenty paint on, as it should have been in the first place. But a quick scout of eBay for spares and there's plenty crash damaged 5yr old+ tanks for silly money (upwards of £100) in nearly as bad state. Think i'll pass on them.

What's this though... $35, from sunny Texas, 08 Tuono oil tank with 10k use but looked in as new nick. I'll be having that, $40post, and the inevitable border thieves fee of £20.

It arrived this week, I'm well happy. I've decided to get it powdercoated to boot. I will get pics up soon.

Anyone else have this problem?

Good info. Sounds like you got a good one! Yup! Recon it's a common problem! My 03 is looking OK at mo, but has been repainted once at least. I've read the side furthest from view is usually worst, as it gets blasted from underneath. Good old Italian steel (not as bad as my old Fiats though... they used to rust from the inside out, cos Italians used to use poor quality recycled steel back in the early 80's!).

Re. Tuono parts on eBay:
Used Tuono specific parts generally seem to be at silly prices! Even when they look knackered. My bike must be worth a fortune in parts!! :lol

you think thats bad...the Gen1 bikes left the factory with bubbles in the paint especially around the mounts for the sight glass.
ALL manufacturers have something on their bikes that rusts like a sod.....Aprilia just seem to focus on giving us mental bikes with so so steel, washers, nuts and electrics...can't have everything perfect or we'd get bored easily.

Too true mate. I guess Aprilia thought that the oil tank paint would chip and rust anyway, so no point doing a proper paint job! :lol

Thanks for the gentle reminder to get my arse into gear and do this. Have ordered everything for a 12k service and will swap tanks during the oil change.

Still have to send the tank to the powdercoaters of course..... :crazy
