Anyone here had or got a Porsche Cayenne?.

I'm changing my car next month. Currently running a Vectra 3.0 V6 CDTi SRi. Great car, amazing amount of stomp / torque for real world driving. But it's time to move on. And after last years snow I'm going the 4x4 route with an SUV slant / bias.

I have two specific ones in mind. The Peugeot 4007 GT which is stonking value for money and going by online owners reviews etc appears to be Peugeots best kept secret with some seriously good bad weather / snow capability. I looked at the BMW X5 4.8is but the wife doesn't like them. Same with the Merc ML.

The alternative "curveball" is a Porker Cayenne. Budget is £15k max, would be looking to ideally spend about £13k tops though but I can stretch a bit if a really good one came up. I've done tonnes of research into the Cayenne and it seems to be a good buy. Servicing costs are nowhere near as bonkers as you would expect if you use an indy specialist and not a main dealer. Parts costs are on a par with BMW's and Mercs. The big killer is fuel. The mpg is pretty dire. Owners report 20 mpg or less on the 4.5S if you are careful. I'm thinking I can live with that though as I don't do a huge mileage per year. I cycle to work most days or take the Mille during the good weather so the car is going to do maybe 6000 - 8000 per year. I'll happily swallow up silly fuel prices over that mileage for the performance afforded by the V8, it's not gonna break the bank too harshly.

So, anyone got a Cayenne here?. Any info on 'em appreciated. :biggrin

Sorry mate not had one but my missus has just swapped her rx8 for a 3.0 jeep grand Cherokee for a bit more space and the dreaded snow which always caused problems for the rx8.

The jeeps got a merc diesel engine and is sweet as a nut, comfortable and a pleasure to drive.

Happy hunting mate

If your thinking Cayene, go for the VW Tuareg basically the same car but cheeper and better specked.

Don't do it.... Electrical problems... Poor wiring.. Far better off with a VW Tourareg... Same platform but worlds apart in quality

Get a range rover sport much more comfort for your money and better looking but make sure you go for the deisel as the supercharger in the petrol likes to **** up and costs a packet to fix, why don't you go for a audi rs4 or rs6 cheaper tax still 4x4 and much less bulky and my m8 had the rs6 and it could pull 180 easy and could give the ape a run for her money.....

Autotrader......might be a bit old, lots of miles but it can be done have a look, 15k is about right for a 5 to 6 year old one but its a buyers market so you could get them down even further.....okay lads how much is my finders fee ,if i buy them 15k and there yours lol......don't forget the lovelly audi q8....youd think ive a hard on for audis

im a master tech at a vw dealer, have been here for 10 yrs working on vw's so obviously hate them by now. BUT i can guarantee you that the vw toureg is the one vw i would buy and own today. they just dont go wrong. the porsche dealer is right opposite my work, the cayenne is the same vehicle as the toureg underneath, it just has more problems. it would be worth you at least testing out the touareg, the 3.0 diesel has loads of grunt, they are now very respected for there 4wd capability. this is from an official vw hater but its the advice i would give knowing the available cars to you and your price bracket. good luck and let us know what you choose!

hi bud my mate from work had the porker 20mph is good for them but put the foot doon and yer looking at 8/10 mpg lol or less no way i would have one vw? not sure either not worth the money mate simple as that the jap 4x4`s are the best mate lwb diesel landcruiser is the tool you want mate they never brake down and would pull you up the side of a building and way better value for your dosh mate.. range rover sport LOL more problems there than your aprilia guys lol.
oh and i wud do diesel all the way stuff that petrol crap . test drive the touareg then test the landcruiser then buy jap mate :)

landcruiser all the way :thumbup we've got one bullit proof and the torque is as good as a tractor.

Deacs :thumbup

Had two landcruisers, the last one a lwb LC4, got the 3litre VW just now and its worlds appart from the Toyota. There is no way I would change back, the VW is much more comfortable and a whole load quicker, down side is the smaller boot and none electric seats.

On reliability the Landcruiser I had no problems, the Touareg however keeps flattening the battery if its not used for a couple of days, its a 56plate with 30k miles on it. The local garage have had it monitored a few times but can't seem to find anything wrong, oh and the standard pirelli tyres are worse than useless in the snow, General Grabbers are much better replacement.

I would try them both

Think you may get a shock with parts prices on Porsche

They can have wiring problems, but suffered water ingress either side of the dash, take off fuse box covers, and you may find rusty dash supports, seen a few like this.

The Cayenne and Touareg are the same except the Cayenne Turbo which is apparently an all Porsche product

You would need to decide considering your driving style, Toyota VX would not match a Cayenne round the ring for instance. If you're looking at 4.8i X5's, i'd guess you're looking for something that can be driven in a more spirited way.

If looking at Porsche v8, beware the cooling pipes under the manifolds have been modified as they burst, some signs of leaking will be red coolant stains on the transmission sump, or left of box from top of engine.

The Touareg is nice, they have some problems with inlet shut off motor faults on diesels, mostly due to soot fouling, and new inlet manifolds come as a kit.

Cayenne or Touareg prop centre bearings break up, and you have to get a complete prop.

On a Bmw you can buy the bearing, on the others its an 800 part

If the porker has big brakes, ie on the turbo option you won't get factor parts to fit, and dealer pads are 200+ and 600+ per disc

People I speak to with them love them both, I suspect the best to run on a maintenance budget is VW

only my 2p

get a proper car or a proper 4&4, suv's are just plain awful, they can't really do anything right...
