Picked up my rsv (03) a couple of weeks ago, it has been a bastard to start since i got it from cold. i think it's running rich, it pops & bangs all the time when i shut off, got a blue flame can on it but no other mods as far as i know. Had to clear using full throttle a couple of times to start.

Anyway, was gonna go out 2day but it wouldn't start either by using choke initialy then trying open throttle to clear, then the bike wouldn't turn over and i could see smoke coming from out of the seat unit !!!

Striped it down to check it out, battery is good according to my optimate.

Checked all the connections, 1 of the starter solenoid wires was a bit loose and the rubber boot over it, had melted a bit, i assume that was the smoke.

I did the regulator wire mod while it was apart, soldered the connectors for a better join/ less resistance, also put a extra set of cable's from the battery to the White connector with a in-line 30A fuse.

Had the battery on charge all afternoon while messing about just to be sure its fully charged.

The bike has a sola alarm but that seems ok. i think

Problem is the bike still wont start, when i turn ignition on the fuel pump/relays work/prime but on pressing the starter button, i just get the pump/relay running again but it doesn't engage the starter motor....

I'm thinking it could be the starter solenoid? my next thing would be a uprated sol off Griff

Any idea's ??

Mark have you tried shorting across the solenoid ? Heavy screw driver then try.(Wont do any harm mate).
I dont know but does the pump etc start up if the tip over sensor is duff/Needs resetting. ? This is in the same area as the start sol worth a try.
I had a similar prob it turned out to be a bad connection at the starter motor took lead off quick clean all was OK.

Easy to check if you are getting a supply to the solenoid, have you a multi meter if so put a lead to Neg and one to the incoming supply to the sol then switch on bike, you should have 12 volts when you push the start button.

The choke as you call it is not a choke, all it does is give the bike a small amount of throttle, if you watch as you turn the lever you will see the throttle body move as if opening up. I never start the bike any other way even when warm from the recommended procedure. Good luck mate hope you get it sorted. Have you a power commander fitted ? if not well worth the money and then take bike to Stephensons at Melling and have it set up, this will also ensure your fuel settings are spot on. You will not believe the difference the commander makes, smooths everything out nice.

Just ordered a new solenoid off griff, even if it's not that, i want a up rated one on anyway. Griff is on holiday until next week but he'll come up to mine sometime and set the bike up, if i can get a few ppl up to my garage for service/set up etc so it's worth him coming. plenty of ppl in the NW so shouldn't be a problem.
Haven't got a PC on, price is a bit salty, i sold my RC8 to free up some cash, don't think the Mrs will be too happy with me blowing a load of cash atm :bitchslap

Think i'd like to go with a modded header and a EVO type filter just to get the bike breathing & flowing better but thats about it.

The solenoid will be here 2morrow & i'm off so hopfully i can get to the bottom of the problem, to be fair to the guy i bought it off, he said, he thought the solenoid was on it's way out.....

BTW, who is running stephensons now, noticed they had a Dyno but havn't been in for years, think last time was in 1989 when i bought a FZ750 off em cos i didn't want to go to the B'ol Dor on my RD500!!!!

His son is running the New Tech side of the company. They have all the stuff for tunning etc, he really knows his stuff good to talk to. Worth a visit just to touch base with the guy never know when we need that bit of advice etc. Glad you sorted the bike air box looks good. Griff came to Morecambe to service mine last year £290 with shim check included worth having done the once I think I serviced it myself this year. Ride safe mate Ken.

Might try and get him back up this way if i can get a few ppl wanting some work done, bike's only done 8.5k and the valve's got done @ 5.5k so should be ok, i'd just want TB & co2 set really, and maybe suspension. will do the normal oil/ filters etc myself. Gonna have to poke me head in to stevvy's, ride past to often enough !!!

You have a mate of mine John Fishwick not long ago started at/in the training section at Heysham.

Somebody told me he might have bought a mille worth asking jusy in case he wants a service ? Ride safe mate Ken.

cool, i'll drop him a line, thinking i might wait & try maybe in Feb, with Xmas coming up, ppl are general a bit skint....

Hey mak, Have you tested your airbox yet? I reckon mine really needs sorting in this area as it should be alot quicker I reckon. I mean its a haga so full twin sided akra system and sbk chip, they are supposed to make like 125 aint they? The one a test rose wasnt even an R (i know that would make any odds to power) just a std nille, same year and miles as mine, but it rev`d so fast and pulled like a train. I reckon it must have has a modded or upgraded airbox, coz mine dont rev as quick and doesnt pull through the gears the same. Must be the airbox, will be interesting to see what difference you think this makes as 165quid for the renegade quit compared to £2! From the recipts I think mine has K&N filter but i think in std box...

Not tried the airbox yet, been on shifts. hopfully gonna give it a spin out 2morrow but my Mrs has just bought me a Xbox :inlove so me & my mate might be on MW3 instead of on the bikes ;)

ooo MW3 dangerous, my mate racked up over 60days play time on MW2 lol.
Battlefield is wel worth a go too if you fancy a change from frantic jumping spinning stabbing quickscoping 5year olds laughing at you in foreign languages lol
Its alot more realistic and strategic, plus you can fly choppers and planes, well satisfying :thumbup

I'm sure i'll get served my arse plenty of times ;)

Does your Haga just need a service & set up @ griff's?

I know I did. "Raped" was the word I believe my supportive mate used when I first started :D

I dont know mate, trouble is I dont really know how these should feel. After being used to R1`s for years then living with the low down gutlessness, but high output top end R6 I`m abit askew as to how fast it should be. All I know is the standard one was an animal (although I only had it for 15mins mins and had just got off the R6) and mine from the momment I test rode, just aint so much. Maybe that one was the finished article with all mods, or just a quick one, and mine aint, or maybe mine does just need a good setting up, I have no way of knowing....

The butt dyno is telling me about 110 at the wheel which is abit pussy... :/

it probably won't be much more tbh, totaly different to a iL4, mine feels so slow after the ZX10r but my mate says he has to gun his (admitly 2001) R1 to keep with me, his probably has 130 but mine romps away out of corner if you get on the gas on nice & early.

I just love the lazy sound, like your never going fast, obviously if you wanna go silly speed a modern iL4 would blitz a RSV but you can only get away with that for so long before its jail or coffin. we rarely go above 120....

i'd get it to griff over the winter for a set up/service
