just as i decide to swap it the bike wont start. ive left the battery on charge overnight, still no joy. its not turning over at all. i have an uprated starter solenoid on it. sometimes i turn the ignition on and get nothing, other times i turn the ignition on and it all looks normal until i press the starter button, i get the click from the solenoid and then the whole dash goes blank. its like i have a poor earth or bad live connection somewhere but looking so far ive found nothing. any ideas pls guys? also, what is the small black box just next to the starter solenoid? it rattles and has an electrical connection. should it rattle?! cheers.

double check the battery leads, the small black box that rattles is you tip over sensor, make sure the arrow on it is pointing upwards.

id check the earth lead ....even run an extra lead straight from the rectifier to the battery

where abouts is the rectifier? do you know where the main earth point is roughly? cheers guys ill have a fiddle tonight in the rain!

Mine has a similar problem. Brought her out last Friday, thumbed the starter and she's been dead ever since. I've checked the battery etc... and am getting a decent voltage but nothing at the dash.

With the key off, put a meter on the battery and check the voltage. Then turn the key on and check the voltage at the battery again. For some strange reason, short I assume, my voltage starts to rise from 2.x until it gets to 5.4 ish (it take 5+ seconds to get there) and then the dash starts to screech/creek... at which point I turn the key to off. I'd be interested to know if you're having the same problem.

I'll check the earths tonight as I hadn't thought about that.

All the best :)

mashman, i fixed mine yesterday afternoon. i had already checked all my earths and lives, all relays and fuses, removed seat unit and fairings and dash insert and inspected the loom, all was good. im a master tech with cars so not a complete fool with electrics. ive had the battery on an optimate at least twice a wk since i bought the new battery in feb, and the optimate showed the battery as ok on all tests. now we get to the problem. you can have 12v at a battery quite easily, what you actually need at the battery especially on these bikes is a dirty great bucket load of amps! and it was only when i measure the current flow that i found my battery was in fact buggered. i had such weird symptoms for this fault, as it was intermittant and not what you would expect for a duff battery. only reason i found this in the end was from an old post on here where someone said that 99% of issues with these bikes is battery related, ive borrowed a spare battery off a mate and it started staright away, and ive even managed to use it to go to work so time to buy one again. ill need to look into some possible charging issues with the bike as i dont want to be putting batteries on every 7 months, does anyone know what the definitive best battery is for these? good luck with yours mash :)

nice one ninja... I've got a spare battery but a mate up the road has my charger... I'll remedy that tomorrow :). gawd I hope it's the battery

AWWWWWWSOMENESSSSSSSSSSS, SHE'S ALIVE... and it was the battery. Got my charger back yesterday, charged the spare battery, hooked her up after breaking a few things, doh!, but she burst into V-Twin rumble... ahhhhhhh all is well with the world once again.

I've been having dead dash syndrome, just bought a new battery and have it on charge till tomorrow when i will try it. I hope i get the same AWWWWWWSOMENESSS feelling!

i think i have the same issue a few turns then the bike went dead and no dash at all however i tried to jump it via a car battery and even with the ignition off the bike turned over with out starting!

what could it be ?

Stormav, i'd say try a new battery. It cured my trouble. Jumping it from a car I wouldn't recommend.

could be
it turned over a couple of sluggish times then clocks went dead completely ! tried to jump it off a car batt but the engine spins over with out the key even in the ignition!
i would have guessed the batt and hopefully its just that ...... but clocks dead is the thing thats bothers me ,surely they should have come to life when i was jumping it?

looking at another post a guy had same probs and he reckons if you have a **** batt the solonoid can get stuck and cause the symptoms so new batt and solonoid will hopefully sort it .. watch this space
