Airbox mod query

Just thinking whilst fitting my hooked....has anyone tried cutting a hole in the top of the standard airbox over the existing filter? The engine could then draw more air through the hole, through the top of the filter as well as the bottom?:dunno

I "doctored" my air box lid by cutting it to form a frame which holds the air filter in place but leaves the rest of it open. I then made a seal from HCM ( as in Badgers box) which seals against the underside of the tank. Works like an EVO mod and cost a fiver.

An air filter is there to filter air, if you cut a hole in the airbox and don't seal it to the tank or the filter it could suck all manner of sh#t into your engine. A bumblebee and some leaves down the velocity stacks isn't my idea of a performance upgrade. although i don't know what bees are made of and maybe there is some extra octane in there?

Hang on, Hang on, :biggrin:biggrin everyones getting confused. Sabre's mod doesn't protect the inlet trumpets? Unless its sealed somehow under the tank to stop it drawing air from directly outside. It quite possibly doesn't draw air through the filter as it will suck easier from around the back? :dunno R896neo, your right, but i wasn't excluding the filter. just to clarify, i was suggesting cutting a hole over the top of the filter black plastic air box top, thus allowing air to suck from above the filter as well as from below, through the filter and into the inlets in the usual manner?

Hi every one, yeah i see what you mean and it might work although you would loose all the ramair effect! It would be able to pull in a lot more air.

read the adam990 link...someone has gone to great lengths to explain the fact you will not loose the ramair effect,,,that making the airbox approx 30% bigger is an advantage......

I think Gixerhowie means just cutting a hole about 3 inches diameter in the airbox lid in the centre of the air filter.
No sealing against the tank. So you draw air in above and below the filter.

This would allow unfiltered air into the air box.

Welcome to air box 101

The standard airbox /evo/Badgers relys upon a closed airbox - the seal on the EVO and Badger keep the air box closed . The air is sucked in through the inside of the filter allowing clean air to pass through into the air box/engine.

The Rene/Hooked system is an open air box system. The air filter sits on top of the Throttle bodies. The air is sucked into the engine through the air filter from the outside of the filter allowing clean air into the engine.

If you follow this principle you will see that merely cutting holes in the standard air box may result in increased air flow BUT part of that air flow would be unfiltered. Not a good thing. The only way this could work is if the air filter was open at both ends ( my K and N isnt) and you made sure there was a good seal.

Phew. Going for a lay down now.:pirate

LOL, Sabre your having a laugh arent you?

Its a hole like the one in the bottom of the airbox cut in the top in the centre of the cylinder filter. The hole mirrors the original one and is in the centre (dirty side) of the filter.

Sorry TLR must be having a bad day. :eatcorn

Are you saying that a) you cut a hole in the closed end of your filter

or
b) that the filter already has a hole in each end and is infact a tube - mine isnt!

The original question was something like this "If I cut a hole in the top of the air box will my bike go faster" or words to that effect.:pirate

i have had the same thought my filter has a hole either end and the top is sealed against the top of the air box so cutting a hole in the top of the air box as long as it still holds the filter in place will still filter the air into the air box . how much extra air it will allow in i am not sure but if it is cut neatly enough you can always plastic weld it back n place

My advice would be to buy one of the sealed on one end filters (eg: K&N) if you were doing this mod, but there's no reason why a standard wouldn't work if remodeling to the Sabre one in the Adam 990 link - maybe check the clearance and if a little suspect add a flat rubber washer type seal between the lid and filter.

mine is a k&n and it has a hole either end which is what i need if i make hole in the air box above the hole in the filter so it is sucking air from both ends

:confused may as well not have a filter then - if I'm visualising your statement correctly :dowhat

How are you filtering the dirty air?

All the forced air coming through from the air intakes would go out that hole you have just cut, pretty simple to see i would have thought:biggrin

The standard filter or K&N, when doing a sealed type mod must have the top of the filter sealed off.
