Air Box Concerns

I was tinkering with the bike today and decided to check/clean the air filter.

The inside conerned me somewhat. There was a small amount of engine oil, presumably from the breather, and some fine grit all stuck to the oily bits. I have recently done a track day, so the engine was working harder than normal that day.

I have a piper cross filter, could this be the cause of the fine grit? I checked and cleaned the filter and there was no sign of damage of leaks. How do they perform in general? Are K&N's better? Shousl I oil the Piper Cross filter?

Can I remove the engine breather from the air box and block the hole? I'm thinking a small filter on the end like in the Hooked open airbox?

Is that enough questions? .. . . . . . :confused

Um Piper Cross are actually better than K&N
DNA & BMC are probably better again.

It maybe that the filter was not oiled correctly before installation or was over oiled, i would get some brake cleaner give it a good soaking then wash with warm water when dry oil lightly .......jobs a good un :)

This is exactly why I fitted the Hooked air box, the filter is directly over the intakes so no chance of any crap getting in to the engine.

I also used to find grit and copious amounts of oil in my standard air box, now I have got rid of it I no longer have these issues.
