Advice on electrics please

I have had the battery out if my 2002 rsvr all winter (in my house) I charge it every other month..I put it in bike today and went for a run out for about an hour and half ..stopped off at cafe for a cuppa started no problem... An hour or so back home i turned bike off had a cuppa went back to bike... No electrics at all...no dash electrics ...when I turn key off speedo needle flickers(moves about 1cm) about 5 times ... Put another battery in and all electrics come back ... So my dilemma is ... Is the battery foooked (probably) or could it be more serious why its not charging?
Would be grateful if someone could give me a starting point .(i will charge it again before i buy a new battery) but when I fit it can i check to see if its charging property?
Thanks guys (I know I sound like a numpty but any advice will save me time and probably money lol)

Hi Nick,
This may help. With your battery connected to the bike and with the bike running at idle you need to check the battery voltage. If you have a multi meter, set it to vollts and put the positive and negative leads on the respective battery terminals and see what voltage reads on the meter. You should see a minimum of 13 volts on the meter if the rectifier is charging correctly and you could get up to 13.8 volts. Obviously the higher of the two readings would be better but if you are getting 14.8v and higher it would appear that your rectifier is overcharging your battery and as a result could damage the internal lead battery plates therefore preventing the plates from holding a charge. In this case you will need to replace the rectifier and also the battery. Also, with the multi meter connected you should also see a slight increase in voltage when you rev the engine. If you don't then again, you will need to check or replace the rectifier. It is also a good idea to check the earth's of the bike as bad one's will cause similar electrical issues. I hope that helps.

Kevin

Cheers Kevin I had a similar problem on my old FZR600 ... Will check with multimeter when battery is charged ;)
Thanks for swift response :thumbup

Just downloaded repair manual ....gonna be a busy boy with me multimeter lol

Right ... I charged my battery up on my optimax IQ charger , after a day and half charger says fully
Charged so I check with multimeter and the reading is 12.87... So off I pop to my bike, I put the battery in cleen all connectors .. Key in ... Turn .. Nothing no dash,Neutral, nadder... I know the bike works as I got my bike home on my mates battery so my question is can my battery say its fully charged kicking out 12.87 yet still be fooooked?
Not even have enough power to light the dash ?

voltage has nothing to do with amps. it just dosen't hold enough amps. and i'm 100% sure it's your battery! :)

I have a similar problem now and again, very rarely. My battery is new, charging is good. I go for a run and then stop, try to start it and it acts as if the battery is flat and resets the dash etc. I switch it off then try again in a few seconds and it's fine. I don't know what causes it, it's happened a few times and would like to know, you're not the only one who is confused Graffi.

My dash dies not reset echelon it is blank no neutral light error nothing like the bike is switched off when I turn the key off rev needle twitches about 5times!!
Just spoke with an engineer at work he reckons battery fried as when I apply load there's nothing there .

Definitely a battery issue there as a multi meter is not the same as a dedicated battery tester. A multimeter works/ measures voltage differently so a 12vdc battery should read slightly over 13vdc with a multimeter; whereas a dedicated battery tester would read more or less 12vdc.
Could be a knackered plate or cell or just a dud battery.

Hope this helps

Cheers for input and advice guys ... Gona raid the misseses purse and buy a new one then test my regulator and solenoid and poss do the brown connector mod while I check the regulator ...
Thanks again guys ;) ;)

If its any help have you seen my thread about a bad battery, it was only 2 weeks old and it was faulty. Was literally the last thing I tried.
When people talk about the white and brown connect mods do,you mean just get rid of the block connectors and join the wires directly?
