Advice on buying 2001 RSV & RSV R

Hi all,

Im a newby to the forum and after a bit of advice.

Can anyone help me make my decision on my next bike purchase.:confused

I have seen 2 absolute minters. Both are 2001 bikes,

One, an RSV R with the full works, Ohlins etc with 21000 miles on the clock with full service history. Completely standard......The asking price is £2995.

The other is a stardard RSV with 13000 miles on the clock with part service history with a few extras inc race can (with chip) and standard can. This bike is currently on ebay a the minute for £2400.

What would you guys go for if you were in my shoes.?? Is the R worth the extra £600.??

Without a doubt the R is worth the extra, both in performance and resale value.

Buy the R version, £600 for full ohlins, oz wheels and carbon bits, no brainer mate.

but you should be ablr to get a later bike for that money

but by the best bike you can

Thanks for that.......Anything else to specifically look for ??

I have heard a lot about clutch problems which is a tad concerning.......?

I have just sold me KTM EXC 400 to get back onto road bikes. Prior to the KTM i had an Aprilia Dorsoduro which was a great bike. Rushed into buying the KTM an lost Sh*t loads a money on it.

i fancy something completely different, hence the RSV.....lovely looking bike.!!:biggrin

I have a 2002 non R version and I have wheel envy of all R owners.
The OZ wheels will cost at least £500 second hand and dont come up often.
My 02 with 10000 on the clock cost me about £2300 so you can always barter.

Dent in swing arm will show if its been dropped, pretty bullet proof really.
They require a tip top battery or you can get problems with the sprag clutch which is part of the starting system.

only the starter clutch but its only a weak point if you try and start the thing on a low battery they need constant topping up with an optimate.

also the starting procedure takes some getting used too...never touch the throttle ...unless its flooded!

Either bike and you'll be happy mate, I'd go for the "R" version in this case simply because it has a full service history so you can see it's been looked after (or not). The Ohlins add nice bling to the bike, but I Hear they're far more prone to popping seals and are generally too stiff for the road. In saying that the carbon and wheels alone are worth the price difference so either way you'll be happy mate. Negotiate on the price, buy it, take some pics and come show us!!

I do not regret buying the r version, especially at the price I got mine for and would highly recommend it! As others have said it comes with some great goodies! Would be worth finding out when the valve clearances were checked last as it costs a fair bit of cash/time to do..

Make sure it starts well with no funny noises.. these bikes are prone to sprag clutch failure.

Well she's here. :thumbup

I used to work at the bike shop I bought it from so he delivered it early for me......

What can I say.?... Absolute corker. Can't stop drooling.....and the sound..... even with a standard can.....Awesome.

Roll on sunny days. If any fellow rsv owners live in the derbyshire Nottingham area and fancy a ride out in summer give us a shout.
