Advice Needed For Cafe Project

Hi Everyone, Hope this isent too sacrilegious for forum members, but I intend
on using a salvaged RSV1000 engine dropped into a wideline featherbed frame
for a project I am about to embark upon and could do with a little help.

As it stands I am considering losing the fuel injection and fitting some carbs
and dynakit for the ignition. Someone suggested to me some large twin downdraught dellortos would do the trick. Does this sound feasible?

And if so, any idea on what model and size exactly? I searched the dellorto
site and couldent really find anything, but my knowledge of carbs is very sparse.
I'm also open to other suggestions here.

Also since I will be using a custom alloy tank with the carbs I imagine I would
get away without using a fuel pump?

Many Thanks

Hi there Scrubs and welcome to the zone :thumbup

Interesting idea for a project squire, what lead you in the RSV motor direction? I'm sort of guessing you are looking to have twin carbs in line with the cafe racer look? From an aesthetics point of view i'd say this is going to be quite difficult as the inlets for the throttle bodies are sat on top of the engine underneath the tank.

That would mean that either you'd need to manifold the carbs off to the side for them to be seen, which is also going to be a pig to sort fuelling wise if you can imagine the shape that the inlet manifold would need to be (and pushing fuel uphill) not mention how much something along those lines is going to cost to fabricate. Or you mount the carbs in place of the current throttle bodies......which will then be hidden under the tank, which means to my way of thinking you may as well of left the throttle bodies in place ;)

If you are set on the using the RSV engine (which is a blinder of course :D) then i'd keep the throttle bodies and concentrate on the aesthetics that are visible to all. Good luck and lets see some pictures when you start please :thumbup

Hey Catepillar, Thanks for the tips.

I settled on the RSV idea because I've owned Rotax motors in the past
and from my experience were very solid motors, I kind of figured it was a good
balance of performance and reliabillity. Also It sits in the Featherbed frame very nicely.

As for the carbs - I decided to go this route - since I will be purchasing
and engine without any carbs included, I thought I might aswell see
if there is a better performance choice of carb as appose to sourcing a standard one.
while it is partly asthetic. I also prefer the slightly more visceral feel of
a non FI engine and I wanna keep it as simple as possible with as little
electrical gubbins, as possible.
They scare me :D

as a note though a lot of the fi system is common to ignition system aswell such as ecu /tps/cps

Be interesting to see how you progress with the carb route squire. I'm still trying to picture in my mind how you will be able to mount them and then the tank atop of it without it all being out of proportion/having a really wide hollowed out tank, or have the tank sat up quite high. When the engine is sat in the featherbed frame how much clearance is there at the top? I guess my concern is the space within the top of the V to fit more than one carb. Hmmmmmm......

As majorjam said, the engines are controlled in so many different ways from the ECU, but then I realise pretty much most things are possible with a bit of ingenuity ;)

I know what you are saying about the visceral feel of carbs, but get yourself a go on an RSV or Tuono thats been downgeared and open airboxed, and tell me how much more visceral you'd like it to be :laugh

Speaking of crazy ideas, you could run the throttle bodies with some tall polished cnc'd intake trumpets and have the custom ally tank divided by a perspex spacer so the intake is all visible from above whilst still maintaing a semi sealed intake system that will roar like a seriously p'eed off lion :angry

Cheers lads,

The two upper most parts of the barrels of the V just reach the top of the frame,
so it's fairly snug.

I'm thinking It may well be a wise move then to save myself some time and headache -
and stick with the original throttle body's and FI! :D

But..I'll experiment with a few stuff first and let you know how I get on, I'm sure I could work something out.
If everything does fit any idea of what size carb would be sufficient for the job and the manifold size?

The standard throttle bodies are 51mm Scrubs, so i'm guessing you'll need to work out what the flow rate is that is standard and then go from there on arriving at carb sizes. Sorry, its at points like these that it all becomes far to technical for me :laugh

Same here mate, when it turns into mathematics my brain seizes :D
Are the manifolds on the barrel head 51mm also?

oh what does the bike red line at?

Thanks for this I apperciate it. :)
