A choice of these 2 mods - which one to pick??

O

OZMILLE

Ok Guys

Time to haul the budget back a little, bike is together and ok.

My wife will only stand for one more mod, if I am caught spending or tinkering unduly again I will be in trouble, so I can choose from the following

1. EVO airbox kit or

2. 520 chain with 16/44 sprocket kit

Have read threads on both, would like to know if I can get only one which would FEEL better to have???

Anybody upgraded slowly and could tell the difference...............

please help OBI WAN, your my only help :dunno

Personally i would go for the gearing option as it makes such a huge improvement over the standard 17/42 gearing. I take it your bike is a 1998 to 2003 model RSV Oz as it doesn't say in your sportsbike title on your profile? The airbox kit will add a few horses to the power curve but nothing too dramatic.

However do you actually need new chain and sprockets. If your chain and rear sprocket are fine, just fit a 15 tooth front sprocket. This will have the same nigh on effect at 16/44 gearing and as said will make the bike so much more rideable with much more instant drive. You may be able to get your evo airbox kit as well :thumbup

Also see the threads about modifying the airbox yourself.

Thanks BB

Probably need the new chain anyway, have a 2000 model. Would like to know where I can find some info on modifying the airbox myself if thats possible!!

Cheers

Loads of info on here about self modified airboxes ...just do a search youll find some really good stuff :)

Hi KIWI

Thanks mate, just been checking some threads.

Although it looks as though many have been trying, has anyone actually kept all the relevant info etc to make this easy for, ahhhhh, well.......... mechanical ******* like myself!! :scared

The good gentlemen Badger and Sprocker are the members to search under for good airbox modifying threads and Aus is your man to be asking about the benefit of a 520 chain over standard :thumbup

I'd go for the 16/44 gearing first, unbelievable difference :devious cant comment on the 520 chain tho' :dunno but carbon kid also has 520 chain :thumbup

Try the airbox mod yourself first, you can get the bits you need for £10-£20, if you make a botch of it you haven't lost too much then. I've tried the Badgers box and it works fine, :thumbup Also done a homer ewe copy but as yet haven't been out on the bike since to try it..

Heres my attempts..

Badger Box

Homer ewe copy

Do a search for Badgers thread on how to do this too for his photo's :thumbup

Badgers box is certainly the easiest method and probably the most durable. I'm not sure how tough the rubber seal i used for the homer ewe copy will stand the test of time :dunno but it's worth a try for a tenner :biggrin

Firstly, what sprockets have you on now and what condition is the chain in, is it a 525 pitch, is it track or road work?

Hi Badger!!

Sprockers has some great info on the airbox so thats always worth the shot!!

Right now I am running the standard 525 pitch chain with 17/42 standards sprox. The bike is only used for road work, I was told that a 520 chain is lighter and as well as the better gearing (16/44) it helps the wheel spin up less mass.

Does that sound right :dunno

I am also told that a good quality 520 chain will also last a fair while, but not as long as a 525 etc, however I dont mind that. Also read that the 520 might give clearance problems with a 190 rear tyre, is that possible?

Cheers Pete

Pete, my suggestion would be doing a DIY airbox as this will cost you just a few quid, thus leaving you able to do the chain conversion.

520 is fine for road use if you buy a good one and go for a 15 front and 42 or 43 rear sprocket would be what i would spend my money on, the 520 combo reduces the weight the engine is having to lug around and therefore allows it to spin/accelerate quicker, life span will be slightly less, but in the same token it will be slightly cheaper to buy.

I would not buy a 190 tyre if it was me, a 180 is better for speed of turn and will not give any fouling problems at all, 190's are for poseurs:doug:nana

So if you go this route you will be getting two mods for the price of one really, keeping her indoors sweet:inlove

Hey Badger

Cheers mate, let me pester you one last time (FOR NOW )

I already run the 190 rear, came with the bike and is still good, so will there be any fouling problems with the 520??

Also on the sprockets, some say 16/44 and others 15/42 (SAME APPARENTLY). However I remember reading that the smaller the front sprocket is the more stress it puts on the engine, listen that could be just BULLSH%T I dont know thought I would ask anyway :dunno

Now, I have just been checking the airbox mods, now the one with the car boot trim looks great using the top of the airbox cut down, heres another question for you. Could you go one step further and just enclose the race filter and the stacks with foam and do away with the entire airbox supposedly creating more volume, sounds NAFF now that I think about it :banana

I can't see why a 520 would foul the tyre as it is narrower.

I have been running 15 tooth fronts for years and it is not a problem with accelerated wear or engine stress.

IMO the airbox is better as a sealed unit which still retains a ram air effect, it also means it is not drawing warm air from around the engine but from the front of the bike, warm air saps power.

All my opinions of course, but they are right:devious

Hey BADGER

Sounds great, problem solved. Shall get the gearing underway, and hopefully try this airbox mod. Mechanically ******** people like myself get a little scared, but WTF I will see what happens.

Cheers for the great advice!!

Just something to think about mate, the Badger box can be removed and put back to standard if you fcuk it up/dont like it or whatever, but if you do the homer one, you will need to buy another airbox lid if it all goes wrong as you've cut it down :biggrin be sure you want to go that route before you start hacking away if your not DIY orientated :thumbup ( it is easy tho' if you dont rush it)

Forgot to add..I've already stated that i haven't tried it out yet, so tho' it might look good, it might be **** LoL
