'99 RSV won't start

Evening all, bought a 99 RSV on Tuesday. The guy started it up fine when I went to pick it up, he didn't do anything special just started it up and it ran fine. I trailer'd it 30 mins home and tonight I've gone to start it.

It has a Datatool Veto alarm, so I disable it and turn the ignition on and get the usual whirring of the fuel pump. Make sure it's in neutral, full choke/idle adjuster clutch in, thumb the starter button and... all I get is a clicking sound that comes from around the battery/rear cylinder area.

I also have an 02 RSV so pulled the battery out of the 99 and into the 02 - the 02 started fine with it. Why would a 30 minute trailer ride stop it working? :confused
 
i'd be checking things like the sidestand switch, although can't remember if mine did start with the clutch pulled in. you shouldn't ned to pull the clutch in btw.
 
Sounds like a bad battery in my opinion.
Have you put the "99" battery in the "02" to see if that starts it?
 
Yep! 99 battery starts 02, 02 battery starts 02, none start the 99. All symptoms definitely sound like a duff battery but I don't get why the supposed duff battery from the 99 starts the 02. The fuel pump sounds nice and strong, and no lights are dim at all.

I left the 02 battery (14 amp Varta) on charge all night in the 99, the optimate this morning said it was 'maintaining' (so fully charged) and it was doing the same thing. It actually turned over once (as in once around, not for a good few seconds) this morning on trying it but all the other attempts were just like last night.

The starter solenoid seems to be on backwards, would that matter?
 
I wouldn't think the solenoid being fitted backwards would cause much of a problem.
I had a similar issue on my bike a few months ago and it ended up being a loose earth strap.

As already mentioned its worth checking the sidestand switch also, its always difficult to guess a solution with these Apes.
I'd be looking at buying a 150amp starter solenoid - Uprated battery and I would definitely do the side stand switch modification.

Just watch that sprag !!!
 
Think I'm going to try bumping it from the car to hopefully rule out the battery, if that doesn't start it I'm going to bypass the solenoid.

What's the side stand switch mod? I won't be damaging the sprag will I? It's not turning the engine at all, and I thought the sprag only gets damaged when the engine gets kicked backwards.

Got a part number for a good solenoid?

Your correct regarding the sprag.
Give "Griff" at Aprilia Performance a call, im sure he will have the uprated parts in stock.
Griff will also talk you through the side stand modification. I was reading on this very forum where someones bike cut out mid corner due to the faulty side stand switch.
I think its a simple case of just cutting the cable by the switch or you can buy/make a block connector which has a bypass on it.

Fixed! It was the starter solenoid (battery was fine). I think one of the connectors has got a bit too much corrosion on as I bridged the gap of the threads with a screwdriver and got nothing. Un-screwed one of the terminals and touched the other with it and it sprung into life :thumbup
 
Ugh! Still sort of have a problem. The bike starts up fine all the time if I just touch the two contacts together, so the problem definitely lies around the solenoid area. However, I took the solenoid off the 02 RSV which definitely works and put it on the 99 and still had the same problem! Put it back on the 02 and the 02 starts up fine.

What could that be? Does my 99 require a bit more juice to start which the working solenoid can't provide? Both solenoids give a good click when I thumb the starter button. I'm tempted to buy a new uprated solenoid but don't want to waste my money. It can't be the thick leads if the starter motor turns over when they are manually touched together, can it?
