just need to understand :dunno

been looking at multiple threads and wondering the above

alot of mixed reviews on which battery to go for? can someone tell me which please :thumbup

currently my bike starts within 3 seconds with cold start lever all the way open and warms up nicely. alot of people have said 'the proper way of starting' what is this? :confused

and what is a sprag? what does it stand for :dowhat

thanks for the help.

Upgrade to a YTX14BS or similar and keep it on an Optimate.
You're starting it just fine - just remember: DON'T TOUCH THE THROTTLE!
The sprag clutch is a one-way clutch on the back of the flywheel that allows the starter to work through a series of reduction gears (because a normal starter wouldn't be able to turn that big old V-twin) and avoids kickback when starting. You're looking at around £170 in parts and two or three hours for a competent home mechanic to fix it. If you start it properly it should be fine - but if it fails to start, do not keep trying the button as that is how sprags get mashed.

As above...but I got a sprag clutch replaced at a dealer for £80 on my last bike....if it's clicking, whirring or crunching when starting...start to get ready for an expensive fix whatever! The key is to keeping the battery charged & not to be too hamfisted with the starting...seriously I once witnessed a dealer trying to start a brand new Tuono as if he was expecting it to explode at any second..gingerly wasn't the word!!

Your choice of battery type is irrelevant, Gel or acid filled, not really the issue here. (I'm sure some will disagree and start spouting about CCA's)

The key is to how you start it and how you maintain your battery.

If you ride at weekends only and have no battery conditioner then your gonna fook your sprag up eventually.

As soon as you suspect the battery is sluggish, bin it and replace it pronto.

I just ordered a Numax one off Ebay for £36 delivered, can't beat that for value.

Alternatively you can pay more money but what you have to remember is my £36 battery has 12 months warranty just the same as the £75 battery.

Link for battery just in case anyone needs one - Numax YTX14 BS Battery

AMB that's all true however please don't disregard other peoples advice and opinions on this forum. We all have a say here and the advice given helps us all. My post stating that a Westco battery was perhaps a better option than the cheap Numax battery was not a dig at you it was merely highlighting another battery option and stating in my view why in fact it was a better option.

This is not a dig at you fella, i'm just stating that we are all here to help each other with advice through discussion

It's better not to have to use the warranty at all - I'd rather have a more expensive one that starts every time and doesn't put my sprag at risk. Buy cheap: Buy twice!
(Sorry, Alan we're not really all getting at you today:thumbup).

SPRAG

stupid poxy rancid agricultural gears

I think that any one that posts advice on here from personal experience is a true gent for sharing.

I don't take any of the posts personally guys, you'll not upset me. I am not a toys out of the pram kinda guy, very laid back, becomes agitated when bike fails to start though.

I'll end with: To all that post, thank you, to all that just read, your welcome!

horrible mechanical crunching noises and a reluctance to start...sounds like someone threw a bucket of bolts into a tumble drier !!

so just the general sound of the bike in that case :laugh

i wouldnt know the difference, hopefully griff can check all for me.

starts fine to be honest, second loop of kick it starts within 2seconds and bumbles away quite happily which is good for me :doug

Hah, now there's a challenge!

I tell you what does upset me!!

Going to the wine rack and finding that the kids have been helping themselves, not a problem I hear you say.

Well it is when they are all under 12 years old.

Little buggers.

I can see 4 kids being up for sale on Ebay very soon.

Well Alan you know the standard proceedure - next time you catch them nicking your wine, force them to drink a whole bottle each - they'll never do it again.:pirate

In theory a good idea, but you can just imagine it!!

Kids are at school and the teacher says 'Right I want you all to write a story about what you did at the weekend'.

The story goes a little like this:

We all sat down on Saturday evening with Dad and he forced us to drink a whole bottle of wine, we got so drunk......

I'd have all the kids in school wanting to come round on a Saturday evening and all of the social workers in Kent queing up to take my kids away.

I have a better idea, I'll pop a bottle, let it fester for a week in the shed and then offer them a drink. That should put them off for life. LOL
