2008 Tuono battery charging issue

Hi all, New to the forum and of course its always looking for help..LOL..
I have an 2008 Tuono approx 30k on the clock. I am getting the service message on the dash and the red warning triangle also. Now i reset the service interval but the issue still there. I checked the ecu for errors and this came up P-code 0616, A-code 50. I am not in any way technical :-( .. Anyone know what this means??? It has been running fine until today when i stopped and tried to start it again, no good. Bumped it and got it going. About 2km the bike just died(think the battery is shot) I put a spare battery into it(from an R1) just to get me home. Had to jump start that too, got it running and got home no issues(aprox 10km journey). Pulled into my garage turned off bike and tried to start it again but wouldn't start. Battery was reading approx 11.5V.
Am i looking at new reg/rec and stator ect. I have a new battery ordered and i will fit that during the week as a first starting point..
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long winded question but mechanics are not my thing unfortunately...
Cheers
Mick.

P0616 A 50 indicates a starter relay fault:

Go into diagnostics and clear the fault code down - (it may be an "old" issue) - see if it returns.

Charge up your battery fully before trying to start it again - weak battery will fook your sprag clutch.

Dont trust the voltage reading on the dash - its crap - you need to put a meter accross the battery to get a true reading.....

do let us all know if the problem has been resolved . as we all like answers to problems especially when it comes to gremlins of an electrical nature .:thumbup

Just an update on the issue. I finally got the new battery fitted(Was away due to work). I let it fully charge for a week and tried it. Faults seem to have cleared, ran an ECU test and no faults showed up. Hope to take it for a decent spin the weekend. Thanks for the help :)

Simple solution to a common problem, many seem to fail suddenly without warning casting all sorts of doubt into the mix, glad you’ve had a good outcome.

Update on the charging issue.. Brought the bike out for a spin last Sunday. All went well until about 30km into spin bike started to lurch and the the red triangle and service came back on the screen. When i reached my destination bike just died. Used a power pack and restarted bike, ran for a few minutes headlight went out, put it into gear and bike died. It looks to me like the bike is not charging. I'm thinking of replacing the full Charging system inc reg/rec. Any ideas on what to get to upgrade the charging system?

it does sound like your stator and rec/reg has eaten its self !!

the stator has probably fried it self . replacement of stator and rec /reg is on the cards .

your symptoms are exactly what I experienced earlier in the year on a French motorway !!! .

I used a stator and mosfet rec reg from electrosport via m and p . all seems well so far !! routing the stator cable thru the engine is a proper ball ache though ...

don't forget a full oil and filter change , and for peace of mind I did actually do an engine flush as well as the stator had started to flake bits off .

when refitting your stator case on the rebuild use dummy bolts to align the casing , as the magnetic pull will pull the case out of centre .

Cheers bud, gonna order the parts and and replace them both just to be sure. Thanks for the info and repair tips. Will post in a week or two and let you know the result.. Thanks again.

Hey Mick..

Sorry to hear of your woes.... but before you order anything... you need to test bits in situ before you pull it apart... assuming you havnt already...

ie you can't test your stator without the engine running... etc....

As you have an 08... the first thing I would do is look at the engine number.... pre 8176929 will " probably " have the 500w combo.... later than that "may" have the revised 370w set up... it is very rare that the later fail.

Also, worth looking into the "cause" before you decide on your route of repair... there are a few options "if" it is a charging issue..... anything from a aftermarket stator for £100 (which may be a short term fix) to the all singing all dancing genuine Aprilia fix at around £1,000 (which should be a long term fix)

Worth looking Into before you part with your hard earned !

Thanks for the advice and helpful info Felix, I will keep you posted........it will probably be a few weeks due to work :-(..

Hi all. I finally got a new rectifer and stator for the bike(the old stator was overheating and melting the wires) All seems to be ok, Battery staying at a constant charge. I still have the red light and service on the dash. Tried the diagnostic menu to clear the faults but no go. Now i haven't been on a long spin to do a full test and see will it clear. Any ideas on what to do next?
Cheers for all the info and help so far...

Hey Philly. I am going to bring it to AMI to try reset the ecu faults. Hopefully the faults are cleared... The real problem is the flywheel, its too powerful on the earlier model thus burning out the stator....

Hey Mick, did you think about contacting Griff in the uk as he is the real Aprilia genius. He sometimes comes to Ireland and was here last year to do service work.

Yea, I mailed them and they rang me. Thats who told me the real issue is the flywheel and the best option is to upgrade to the newer 370W from later models.. The issue id that fix is about 870 UK POUNDS, plus gaskets ect....

Jesus thats a lot to fix, i presume that is your only option.Whats your plan of attack now Mick

M&P do a pattern part for about 110 pounds, at least one guy on here has used it without any problems:thumbup

Might just wait and see what happens, if it goes again then i'll have to replace it. I will be keeping an eye out in the breakers for an engine of the later models though :)
